You know it would be nice if there was a system that didn't break it up into turns but wasn't bar-based either. Like just somebody has their turn come up, it might be an enemy or it might be one of your guys, the bar mechanic works behind the scenes but it just, you know, skips the stupid building-up part and just does mad algorithms to figure out whose bar is going to fill up first. Or did a Final Fantasy game try that way of doing it already.
I realize you can press X or triangle to switch guys who all have enough bar to do a command but does anybody actually use this feature
Edit: I might have even used X/triangle I just forget if it was actually useful or not
Edit: By the way regardless of whether any Final Fantasy was actually good I think we can agree that in the words of Peter Griffin the newer Final Fantasys INSIST UPON THEMSELVES much more than the old ones. Like on the NES/SNES the characters and buildings aren't that detailed and you can imagine a much cooler group of heroes than Squaresoft intended in an epic-looking castle/dungeon but in the later Final Fantasys there's this horrible anime hero and it's just burned into your retinas
also what was there in enough detail (the much larger monster sprites and the character portraits) and the Amano concept art we saw in the Nintendo Power articles is quite good imo I wish they would make like a cel-shaded Final Fantasy game but like Amano-shaded
I do lucidly remember playing Final Fantasy VII for the first time and going into the menu and the character portraits had changed from this really artsy Final Fantasy III style to gay anime shit and I was pretty pissed - this is not years later after thinking about it and having changed tastes over the years this was immediate disgust and repulsion upon opening the menu
Edit: Regardless of whether either of them looks capable of killing huge monsters and being sliced with giant swords without dying and just losing a little HP, which group of people could you see growing attached to by the end of the game/caring about more as if they were real people

Edit: Setzer kind of sucks but I still stand by my opinion
Edit: Also General Leo
Edit: Setzer still has more personality like JOHNNY DEPP AS SEPHIROTH
