when you do enough math problems you begin to see patterns and start thinking a certain way. The process of thinking as applied to a math problem can translate quite well to real world situations.

Yeah, but that same thinking doesn't have to be learned JUST through calculus AT ALL, so it's not a very good argument for why calculus itself is important.

when you do enough math problems you begin to see patterns and start thinking a certain way. The process of thinking as applied to a math problem can translate quite well to real world situations.

And no calculus is not critically important for every person, but there's no DOWNSIDE to knowing it. If you can write down an equation describing a system you can determine pretty much how any of the variables about it changes relative to anything else under any conditions, which is immensely useful in many, many applications.

I didn't really mean that towards you only, but more towards

what the fuck man. i do think calculus should be optional not like in mexican highschool where they drill that shit to you and it makes a shitton of people dropout. but saying is worthless for anyone except engineers is being a dumb philistine along the lines of how some engineers say literature is worthless. it teaches you to think analytically and most important of all, to make a crystal clear argument. simply because my career is based on rigurorous proofs i can see what is a muddled pseudoargument (debord......) and what is a real argument. the skills learned in rigorous mathematical derivations are pretty universal and can be applied to most arguments. (wittgenstein was a mathematician lol)

this is completely an argument about why CALCULUS itself is important, that is more what I was replying to, i agree with you about math in general making more sense with that argument, but math isn't calculus

edit: also this is dumb as hell:

"calculus is worthless gonna do something more worthwile" *goes and plays videogames*

all everyone was saying is that calculus doesn't have many real world applications to the average person

You could say the same thing about algebra, but it makes life a whole hell of a lot easier if you work with numbers to any extent.

most people never work with numbers to the point where they need complex equations.

saying that -4^2 = (-4)^2 is just lazy and careless math.

Not really, it seems like a much more logical way of interpreting it to me, so without any formal instruction telling me otherwise, that is how I see it.
