I don't want to argue with half of the forum really, but by this logic if you want it to be -1(4^2), you say -1(4^2).
How is it -1(4^2) by the same logic? That's a different operation already. I just simply meant that even though you could assume it's (-4)^2, it's not because... it's not. I'm not saying you can't assume that and it's easy to get it wrong especially if you have been taught it the wrong way (or not taught at all) but just assuming it's (-4)^2 doesn't make it right.
or then i completely misunderstood your post because im not really sure what you are trying to argue exactly.
EDIT: Or I'm not completely sure if you'd call it different operation but even so, -4^2 is not lazy math because someone doesn't know how to count it. For example, 1+2*3^2 isn't lazy because you don't type it as 1+(2*(3^2)).
