I voted 16, thinking -4 * -4 = 16. I read the responses here and yeah, it's not something my teachers ever told me about. I've heard PEMDAS and "the square of a negative is a positive" quite a few times though.

i remember some f(x)dx stuff and a +c how come none of that came into play or did it and you're being sarcastic.

lets go over some calc in this thread.
Sum of (9/10)(1/10)^n to infinity where n=0 at beginning = 0.9 + 0.09 + 0.009 + 0.0009 ... = 0.99999 ...

a/(1 - r) = (9/10) / (1 - (1/10)) = 1 = 0.99999...

oh shit.

also yes i know this has been referenced like 6 times in this thread.

I was so happy that I got done with the series and thought I'd never have to do that shit again.............

I don't want to argue with half of the forum really, but by this logic if you want it to be -1(4^2), you say -1(4^2).
How is it -1(4^2) by the same logic? That's a different operation already. I just simply meant that even though you could assume it's (-4)^2, it's not because... it's not. I'm not saying you can't assume that and it's easy to get it wrong especially if you have been taught it the wrong way (or not taught at all) but just assuming it's (-4)^2 doesn't make it right.

or then i completely misunderstood your post because im not really sure what you are trying to argue exactly.

EDIT: Or I'm not completely sure if you'd call it different operation but even so, -4^2 is not lazy math because someone doesn't know how to count it. For example, 1+2*3^2 isn't lazy because you don't type it as 1+(2*(3^2)).

What's this PEMDAS shit? Down here in Aus we have BIMDAS (Brackets, Indices, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction)!!!

no it's not, the order of operations acronyms just put mutiplication/division and addition/subtraction separately so you know they exist, it's really, in PEMDAS because that's the one i know:
Parentheses, Exponents, (negation apparently), Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction

Yeah, the order you do division/multiplication doesn't matter, but if you're using BO then putting division first makes it look more like a word than BOMDAS (at the same time, PEDMAS looks weirder than PEMDAS)

The U.N. needs to get off their asses and enforce a single order of operations phrase RIGHT NOW.
