If I were to ever feel that I'm in too buoyant a mood, this would be the first DVD in the tray.
The last film I saw that left me with a sour taste in my mouth was Revolutionary Road. One of its final scenes actually left me feeling rather nauseous, all thanks to Mendes' unflinching direction. And the music by Thomas Newman (I almost wrote "Newton Howard" then, confusing him with another composer) is greatly evocative. I doubt it's still in cinemas, but I recommend it highly.
how's your valve ignatius?
i know ton(nes) of bleak sad day drama shit like this! there's plenty to go around. sadly alot of it is pure shit. you don't want lists so i'll just give you a couple that i think are all right:
half-nelson:
everyone likes half-nelson. it does the shaky cam, grainy film stuff and the 'ron stark emotional realism' that we all like so much. long scenes without music, ugly close ups. it's about a crack addicted school teacher and his accidental friendship with one of his students. it's american.
nobody knows:
this is a film about 4 abandoned kids in tokyo who need to try and survive with very little money and no-one to help em out. it's got a lot of pretty scenes with music and stuff, so it's not all bleak it's kind of tragic beauty type stuff but it turns out pretty sad and depressing yeah. i like it i like it quite a bunch.
i actually can't remember any ones that are GOOD you know. there's the brown bunny which is pretty much the bleak sad drama thing taken to the absolute extreme but that film is just one long ejaculation into your senses by vincent gallo so i wouldn't recommend it as a good film. or sherrybaby but i can't remember if i liked that i just remember it was emotionally volatile.
oh yeah leaving las vegas is a good sad film. it's about an alkie who goes to las vegas to drink himself to death. he meets a prostitute there and they become best buds who have sex and get drunk. but then it all gets sad. it's kind of an ornate film, there's a lot of jazz music and then kind of operatic music. it's not particularly sad to me, but i know alot of people find it kind of devastating (my mom sure does!).
also time for hilarious sarcasm:
