I've been craving a good rpg for the longest time.  The last one I beat that I really enjoyed was back in 2003.  However, I've noticed that I'm not really interested in most of what the genre has to offer these days.  That being the two staple settings.  Fantasy (usually medieval) or Futuristic.  I feel as though they're overdone and mostly uncreative in their execution.

The only rpg I've played that broke this mold was Parasite Eve.  Sure even though it had a bit of fantastical stuff (mitochondria, etc) it was still set in the modern day.  For the life of me I cannot think of another game/series I played that did this.

So I turn to gw.  Are there any other rpgs that are set in the modern day?  I'm looking for any game you might know of, whether you've played it or not.

Barkley is the only game I can think of so far.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I own/have access to a lot of systems.  The game(s) can be for any of these (I can also emulate):

NES
SNES
Genesis
Sega CD
N64
Playstation
Sega Saturn
Dreamcast
PS2
XBox
Gamecube
PS3
360

Gameboy
Gameboy Advance
DS
PSP

Sweet Home for the NES, Pokemon for every nintendo handheld, Earthbound Zero(Mother) for NES, Earthbound for SNES, Mother 3 for GBA(or was it ds)a fan translation was released recently...

Bob's game, when it comes out...

Man how about this when I'm done with my shooter I will MAKE YOU a modern RPG... in XNA...

EDIT: what do you mean by RPG by the way, does it need turn based combat and all that or if I found a game like Oblivion or Fable II but modern, would you count that as an RPG?
don't mind me, just postin' after a few brewskies
somebody’s Barkley --- could be another’s Monopolo.

I'll check out Sweet Home.  I played pokemon back in like 1998 or whatever and I don't feel like playing it ever again so I'll pass on that.  Tried out Earthbound a couple years back, don't remember liking it.

Edit: Ok, Sweet Home is kind of neat, though not exactly what I was looking for.

Hmmmm... Metal Max... no thats future too.

Live a Live? I mean it's got some fantasy and future in it, but it's also got western, feudal japan, prehistoric, and modern settings since it spans multiple time frames. It's like a bunch of mini adventures tied into one.

A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

Shin Megami Tensei series, almost all of them take place in either a modern day setting, post-apoc settings or in the case of the first one, both.  The main series takes place mostly in post-apoc(though the first one has a big part in a modern setting), the persona series is all modern with a big focus on high school kids(except eternal punishment), the devil summoner games are action rpgs in an early 1900's settings i think and the Digital Devil Saga is a futuristic post-apoc game with cannibalism.

Also, I've never played it, but I hear Vampire: The Masquerade(might be a series?) is pretty good, and I'm pretty sure it's an RPG. Somebody confirm/deny this for me.

Edit: Also Shadowhearts: Covenant (also a series I think?) is set in an alternative WW2 setting I think?

I'll pass on Shin Megami Tensei but Persona 3 and 4 sound interesting.  I might give either or both of them a try.

V:tM is alright, but nothing that special.  I've never played Bloodlines but my roommate told me is wasn't that great either.  Shadowhearts: Covenenant sounds ok but it's set in WWI and that's kind of old.  I might check it out.

As for what specific kind of rpg I'm looking for, if you found a game like Oblivion or Fable II that was set in the modern day that would be fine.

Edit: Brown, I hope that was a joke post buddy.

VTMB is awesome, i love it. I havent heard of any other games in the series, and if they existed, theyd be developed by a different developer. Its definetly worth getting.

For Nintendo DS: The World Ends With You

Not sure if that's your bag or anything but the setting was inspired by modern day Shibuya.

never played this but yeah

there's lots of random jap games about demons taking over tokyo or whatever that take place in modern times (well Shin Megami Tensei and like one other one but I think it's like kind of a cliched RPG plot over there for one reason or another)

I think there's actually a lot of rpgs over there that are modern settings just with supernatural forces creating the 'fantasy' part of the game, but the catch is you have to play as SAILOR MOON or some crap

somebody should make a redneck rpg like same idea as one of the above games aliens or hell demons are invading someplace in the US but instead of being some random teenager who gets magical powers you have to go to Wal-Mart and purchase beer and shotguns and there is a complex rib management system with over 1000 different kinds of ribs possible

you can also beat the game and start a New Game+ with Larry the Cable Guy in your party

Edit: Most of the games like Persona probably aren't modern so much as not-too-distant future and it's a rule that the closer in the future a game/movie takes place the more annoying the futuristic bits are. Like you picked up a book oh wait it's a CYBER-BOOK. Earthbound was probably like the only game that was supposed to be right now or at least only 2 or 3 years from now. It could even be slightly earlier time period because nobody seems to have computers in that game I don't think (or name better example of a recent invention that would've existed when the game was made)

i don't have anything to add to the issue except Mother 3. i hope you aren't having a prejudice against it because of Earthbound. it was released few years ago and it's one of the best jrpg's out there!

Theres also a ShadowHearts in an actual modern setting, like 70's or 80's. I forgot what it's called, I thinks 3 or 4.

I still recommend Live A Live, although it's deceptively dark.

i played some polish world war 2 rpg called another war but it was terrible. i also played a decent modern polish rpg called gorky 13. it was sort of like final fantasy tactics meets resident evil. you might like that.

Terranigma on SNES. It's amazing. First the game starts off slowly but then it gets better exponentially.

Persona 2 might be your thing if you haven't tried it yet.

Warning: There are some really annoying amounts of random battles & weird dungeons you have to navigate. Could be a lot more fun if you cheat to avoid those somehow. Persona 1 was neat too but combats are way too long for me to recommend it (1 minute of animations every turn...)

I dunno, I think Shadow Hearts takes part in 1940s Europe or something like that but I only played the first game briefly and I didn't like it very much. I have also heard Shadow Hearts 2 is much better so you might want to look into them.
