Blitzen, I'm surprised I didn't mention either of those as well.  I own both and have beaten both -- they're great games.

A few days ago I went to my local gamestore.  I picked up Beyond Good and Evil and Persona 3: FES.  Haven't had time to check out either yet.

Edit: I read up on the Shadow Heart games and they don't really sound like what I'm looking for.  More suggestions are welcome.

Shadow Hearts 2 is really, really generic jrpg, there is really no reason to get it over some other jrpg, it doesn't have anything going for it.
Yeah, I dunno, never played 2 so. First one wasn't really as much typical as it was boring and uninteresting. And it felt really unpolished.

I played thrid, from what I did play getting the good ending was a little obscure. So it might not be your thing (music is catchy though).
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

Koudelka, the precursor to the Shadow Hearts series, is pretty good.  It's set in the early 1900s, plays like Resident Evil the RPG, pretty good story, and the big plot twist came when you had to to get the good ending.

I liked Shadow Hearts.  I own Covenant and From the New World (which I believe is set in the American west) but haven't played either.

I like SH alot, but yeah, I can understand people's gripes about it. Although, SH1 is unpolished perhaps for the fact it was a PSX game that was ported to the PS2 before it got released because the PS2 had come out. At least it doesn't look/sound/play/suck as bad as The Summoner.

SH2 and SH3 are almost twin games, not because they have the same setting or anything, but because they have also exact same(SH3 did change a few things but not enough) gameplay and some plot points seem outright copied from SH2, especially "jokes". It's also arguably not as good as SH2.
But yeah, I still have to try Koudelka, but I hear it's super and well, doesn't have any of this "what another generic jrpg"

For those interested, if any, SH2 is also much lengthier than the others in the series.
