i would agree with this buuuuut when i was looking into the UC system schools, basically every source said that UCSD had a weak social life.  like, apparently it was just a bunch of commuters or something?  and also ULTRA SERIOUS ASIAN KIDS who did not really have much in the way of social lives.  and then everyone went home on the weekends.  these are probably exaggerations to some extent but again, since literally everything i heard about the social experience said this, i don't think it's too far off.  the COLLEGE EXPERIENCE thing is great and all but it only applies if you go to a school that's good for it.  i don't think it's anything to write home about if you're going to a school of commuters/people who go home on the weekends who all take studying really seriously or w/e.
That's what I've heard, too. Now that I think of it, UCSD doesn't really have that much going on. The most I've seen it do was the Winter Game Fest a few months ago, and seriously? (not to offend our hardcore gamer friends) but not exactly the group I'm looking for. Heh. Yeah, I probably know a few of those crazy asians. They're pretty lame. You make a good point about the commute, btw. Because I live so close, it's be pretty stupid for me NOT to, but nothing really justifies going in the first place if I can just go to Palomar community college or something. UCLA's supposed to be good socially, and I got into UCSB, which is supposed to be a big party school. I dunno. I have a pretty strong relationship with my girlfriend and I know it's gonna get in the way somewhat of my 'social life' (women are time-suckers), so I figure I might as well be a hermit and just work on that general ed in community college, and save up money.

But that sounds so fricking BORING

AAAGH

wait would you be commuting to ucsd?  definitely go to community college then!  it is practically the same thing at that point.  what joe said only applies when you're living in some dorm and doing stupid college kid shit.  if you're just going to commute there along with the rest of the serious asian students who commute and then go straight home at night/on the weekends then you will probably not really MISS much by going to a community college for a couple years.  plus, let's think of the benefits:

-save you (your parents) a ton of money
-get much better grades because community college is for retards, so getting into a better school than ucsd after your first couple years should be easy
-less stress from schoolwork because see above
-more free time to do whatever the hell you want because again, less time spent doing schoolwork because getting straight As is easy as fuck.

i mean if you wanna go to ucsb and do the COLLEGE THING then do that but if you're choosing between ucsd and community college only then it seems pointless to pay more for the former when the experience is so similar.  you'd probably find both really boring, in which case COWBOY UP or just go somewhere you think is fun!

if you don't have to work in a job during your time in college (IE, scholarships) or your time commitment is minimal and the job is fun/easy (work study!), it's worth it to move onto a campus. it is a lot of fun and it is the only time during your entire life that you will have that amount of free time, access to friends/activities/girls/parties/great facilities, and just general fun, unless you are rich.

it is really nice to be able to just GO OUT WHENEVER and talk to people too!!

but if you're commuting than there's really no difference between community colleges and a 'real' school, and frankly a lot of community colleges are just as good if not better than a lot of universities.

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

wow really?  i guess it depends on the school but ucsd is supposed to be pretty good so i assumed whatever random local community college he'd go to would be easier.  if i went to a uni that was easier than my school right now (it's even supposed to be a pretty good community college) then i would probably die of relief.  i am prepping for it being a LUDICROUS JUMP IN DIFFICULTY tho.

it's not so much a quality of education thing, though.  i have a lot of good profs who teach at much nicer/more expensive private schools in the area.  it is more about them having to cater to really dumb people.  i've never been in a class that wasn't at least half full of really huge morons and the profs can't FAIL half the class so they have to make things really easy.  i'm not complaining but maybe the difference was that your community college wasn't filled with as many dumb people as mine.

this though for real. i have a pretty big feeling that half of my teachers are MUCH BETTER THAN THEY LET ON because the students are all so fucking dumb. no joke when i say this little asian girl asked me in my history class today if ww2 was the one with hitler in it!
