I played this once or twice against rami and got bopped all the way to the stone age by him. This is the type of perfect information game you can't play if you don't like the idea of losing solely and fairly on ability or lack thereof, just like chess. If you lose, you can't blame it on bad luck at all (edit: OR LAG).

Maybe I'll play you again because I want to know a little more about this game but I don't think I'll make the commitment to "switch" from chess to go. Then again, I haven't played chess in a long time, so...

did you really love japan?  like anime//japanese popculture (i.e. japfag shit) or like actual japan?  because i find the country itself pr. interesting but have trouble picturing you being like YES....JAPAN RULES *watches an anime, eats pocky* but then i have a hard time picturing anyone doing pretty much anything so who knows
this was a long time ago, before pocky became big. but yeah I did like anime and pretty much all japanese shit for a little while. my parents had me in a heavily cultural okinawan karate since I was 9 tho so it was kinda inevitable. the only anime I saw during that time was toonami shit which was like zoids, and I bought the boxed set of evangelion. I also had some mangas and a few how to draw anime books. I was the only kid in my school besides the REALLY nerdy folks who liked that shit so I never had any anime friends, and my other friends either scoffed at the idea of cartoons or were the 'anime sucks....besides cowboy bebop' kind. but yeah, this was me for about 2 years.

Uh, one time you were close to beating me on a 13*13 board but you never beat me and you most certainly didn't come close to beating rami (seeing how he had already played like half a year then) unless he gave you a huge handicap.

you should keep playing tho vesp :( and come back 2 irc

i have such an unreasonable dislike of go and chess. i used to tell omeg HEH ALL INDIANS PLAY CHESS IM NOT GOING TO but i just don't think i'm made for it or something. a friend of mine got into go, and he's really a dumb guy so i was like "okay i'll encourage this" but before i even discovered he got his love from the anime (there is a go anime) i really grew to dislike it. i'm not sure why. i'm pretty bad with most board games actually! at first i thought it was because I GOTTA WIN EVERYTHING but when i play scrabble i never play for points so i dont know.

regardless i would say this might carve some new mental brainwaves for everyone, it's always good to know how to do this kind of thing, so i'm pro this topic. i still don't think i'll pick it up though.

I really fail to see what's so bad about any of this but find it funny none the less that you confess everything like it was really a hate crime or cocaine addiction.

Maybe it's the stress of someone else sitting on the other end of the board. Maybe you're afraid to fail... or maybe you ARE good at it but don't want people to think you're the type of person that's good at chess. Or maybe you don't like the smug look on your opponent's face when he en passants you all the way back to the stone age. Maybe it's because Bobby Fischer was an antisemite but all the chess players still mourned when he died.

That Go anime did get me interested in Go, I'll admit. (It's not like I've never heard of Go before then, but it always seemed like a convoluted mess that I couldn't imagine myself enjoying) But really all it did was get me mad that nobody ever made an anime about Chess.

I do want to learn the game, but I don't know if I'll be able to. With Chess it was easy because I could get just enough of it to beat plenty of people while still learning, but I don't know if I can take the amount of sucking and losing it would require before I can get the basic idea behind what it requires to not suck at Go.

So yeah, I'll get into it anyhow. (Maybe in a couple of weeks, since I should be posting in the "getting raped by school" topic right now) If you see me on IRC, feel free to challenge me to a game. (Especially if you are new to it aswell.)

Note that there are tens of thousands of players on gokgs and new players start playing all the time. All you have to do is to challenge people around your rank (you'll rise to 20k in a day or two) or let people around your own rank challenge you and you'll surely be able to play even matches.

This game is in the film A beautiful mind and the guy from gladiator maximus (sp) says it's "the game is flawed"

do you have any counterarguments?

My friend's been trying to get me into this for some time now. I've read the rules but never played a match, but I might give it a try. That #go isn't up yet?

Edit: those stones in the opening post look delicious.

for those new to the game you might wanna try a little thing called igowin
http://www.smart-games.com/igowin.exe

it's a little 9x9 game where you play against an AI where you start out with lot of handicap, which gets reduced the better you get.
it's good as an introduction to the game and it's fast as well, as opposed to waiting for opponents n stuff.
