There are an unusual amount of people who post and watch videos of themselves opening boxes for apple products. Look it up on youtube, it's bizarre.

unusual? it's pretty common to record weddings or the birth of a child. it's not too bizarre.

I don't know how much of this you can get from the Apple Store since I got mine online (I would hope a lot of it can be useful to you too though), but definitely look into any and all promotions they have at the time.  Especially with summer coming up, they're going to be doing a lot to get college students to buy their products.  When I got mine, I got a free iPod, free printer, and a hefty student discount.  It makes a huge difference in the price (especially if you were going to get an iPod or printer anyway, but even still the student discount is enough) so don't hesitate to find out about this.  Also I believe there was a mail-in rebate or two.  Find as many of these things that you can before buying one.

Snow Leopard is supposed to be mostly a performance update, isn't it? I don't know, unless they're hardware updates I'm not sure if I would wait. Make sure you check the Buyer's Guide before buying (it's "safe" right now).

Anyway, I say go for it. I bought a white Macbook about two and a half years ago and still love it, though I do recommend getting a monitor too.

why a monitor?  if hes getting this laptop for college he's probably going to be moving around with it a lot.  it would be nice for when you're using it at your desk, but annoying to have to tear down everytime you want to move with your computer.   definietly get an external mouse (its nice for games) and possibly keyboard though (this is more if you actually get a monitor then)

It takes literally one second for me to pull my mini-DVI connector from my macbook to disconnect it fro my monitor.  I don't see how that's any more annoying than unplugging the power cable.

deskspace is very small and valuable in a dorm! a monitor seems like it would take up too much space.

Nah man, I had a 19" monitor with no issues in my dorm.  Though really, I guess he should move in first and then see if he has the space for a monitor.  I could see that being a good reason for not having one but TOO ANNOYING TO DISCONNECT is not.


Or, if you're getting a new TV when going to college as well, see about getting one you can hook your computer straight into.  Kill two birds with one stone.

Useful warning: it's a mac. 

Sarcasm aside (though I really do hate OSX) I'd say get a nice Logitech mouse like the MX Revolution. Beyond that I really don't know. Mac computers are very well built if you can stomach the price.

what don't you like about OSX? It's basically BSD Unix with a pretty UI
