Yeah the developers give current testers keys to send to friends every now and then and then there's other communities they give like 200 keys to give out. I also got one through Facebook (by being fan of the game).

I've been playing Heroes of Newerth, and I got to say I'm hooked. I love it way more than DotA, all the improvements and such in it are fabulous. Some of the heroes (Thunderbringer, The Madman, Defiler, and Moon Queen especially) seem utterly ridiculous at this point, but I'm told that's because Thunder + Madman's DotA counters aren't in yet, and Defiler doesn't have the changes from the latest DotA patch so yeah. Moon Queen is only broken imo because everything stacks, so you can get massive life steal & mana burn on her glaive attack and she just shreds through people like butter, combined with her ultimate and you have an insanely good carry. Some of the new heroes (Scout especially) seem bad/mediocre though. Pubs keep complaining about how OP he is, but they never take Wards or Dust. Ever. I think in comparison to DotA though, it's better off in balance at this point, mostly because there are less heroes and the ones there are were tweaked in some ways.

S2 Games is a really good company too, so I hope it gets a lot of support, they've said this is their last game and if it fails they got to call it quits. It's so good though, and in a very established genre so I have no doubt that if they advertisize it right, they're good to go.

What? Its their last game that they are depending on? Shit they're fucked. Why would they depend on selling a product that brings people into an elitist, highly competitive, douchebag community?

The community is shit, there is no debate over that, it's just absolute garbage, but they've made some improvements to make it newcomer friendly. For instance, games can be classified as new players only, meaning that people with 50 or more games are unable to join them. This helps a lot as the useless players who have some ability to play the game won't be able to team up against a team of complete beginners and trash them.

Also the market is pretty big even if they only get a fraction of the people who play dota to buy their game, and they have a quality product on their hands here as far as I can tell so they got a pretty good chance here for a success.

From what little I've played Savage 2 and now this they are pretty good developers and they've got lots of talent on all the fields, voice-acting could do some re-evaluations but that's about it. I have to mention the netcode is amazingly good, maybe it's just so noticeable because I'm comparing it to dota where the actions are really delayed without a third party software.
