man it's not because women DON'T LIKE PHYSICS. it has to do with gender stereotypes and how women are raised to think they should like certain things and not like other things, how they should do certain things and aspire to be certain things. it's like asking why aren't there more black lawyers? why are there so many asian nail salons?

thats what ive been arguing you dummy. but theres been whole arguments about how for example, male physics profs have a bad teaching approach because females are more "verbal".

yeah i dunno why youd make this when that was the first thing that occurred to me too???  idk do you really need a discussion on why women are underrepresented in math/science fields

the issue here is that this is not really the case for like biology or chemistry. its only in mathy areas. why?????? minorities are underrepresented everywhere (except asians), thats not the case with females in the sciences.

well they certainly do love to talk XD

also is it only maths?  i thought the ratio of males to females was still fairly imbalanced in biology/chemistry as well.  i mean youre talking degrees here but i didnt think there was a huge discrepancy

This is the faculty of plant biology at msu

A little more than half are females.

well as a dummy in regards to both math and science i think i perceive a difference between the two, so that probably means other people do as well.  obviously women also feel like biology/chemistry/other organic sciences??? or whatever are more accessible to them than say math/hard science like physics.  maybe it's because a lot of people have the perception that one is more BRAINY than the other.  real.........man's work heh.  i mean biology is pretty heady stuff but ASTROPHYSICS and whatever other crazy stuff you're into is substantially more so in a lot of people's eyes.  maybe this is why it is viewed as more of a man's field in contrast to fields people perceive to be less complicated.

Since she's, as I understand it, a maths-loving Cock Socket I'd like to hear esiann's opinions on this

That's odd. In my school, most girls do physics. I steer clear away though.

oh it's all a matter of culture. culture and basic brain structure that is... the gap's probably going to narrow steadily over the next idk couple decades though

to tell a pointless personal anecdote for a couple paragraphs, my mom's dad was a repairman and pretty much all her brothers are engineers, electrical or computer. she taught herself calculus in high school because there weren't adequate math courses there. she went to college for civil engineering and was the first female engineer where she worked. although apparently she wishes she'd done ece. anyway, she is pretty big on math. not as big on words or aesthetics.

my dad went to college for business or something and got his mba and then did business things for the navy and basically he lives to network. he is a very social person. not that big on math. he understands it, it just isn't very interesting to him. he is pretty big on words.

comparatively i like my mom more so i guess that could impact it. i like everything though, i doubt glottal stops or anything like that will ever be fascinating to me but i like learning about things. i think most people do.

anyway i will probably not have to deal with math too much in my future career. i like learning calculus and math in general but i can't imagine doing a degree in it, i'm not good enough at it for that. my cousin did math and recently he's done something with einstein and tensors in the name and i do not even understand.

cultural internalization is irritating to me today

are you only talking grad school?
the reward mathmatics brings is similar to masturbation, it's more acceptable for men to do maths because society accepts that they have certain 'urges' but it's less acceptable for women to transfer their libido to practical stimulation like maths or gaming.

I USE Q'S INSTEQD OF Q'S

Chemistry - Blow things up
Most of chemistry is actually geared toward preventing this from happening.

Also marmot, I've read that there's a predicted demographic shift in this, I can't remember where though.

I think currently most women are drawn to science as a means of entering a medical profession because it is a culturally reinforced "respectable womans job" where compensation discrepency between men and women either doesn't exist in many cases or isn't as severe as other industries. This probably explains why there's little interest in math/physics for women studying science.

I am not talking only about undergrad but people in grad school. People who study biology in grad school don't aim for medicine. Also fuck premeds theyre the scum of the natural sciences

you see the thing is that people arent as bad as math as they think its just they dont know how to study math. they think its the same as studying for *folding origami 201* or *lying with graphs 451*. It requires a complete different methodology. i am not talking about you in general i am only ranting. i am not a great mathematician either

Its cuz they didn't get into med school and realized that an undergrad degree in Biology is pretty worthless.

lol
