Oh wow. I wanted to post a topic about Octopus City Blues here but I was too lazy. It's really cool seeing my game in an awesome topic like this one. Thanks!

I watched Inception yesterday. Really cool movie, probably the best one I've seen this year. The only problem I had with it is that it felt that there wasn't enough time to explore all the ideas that they introduced. I kept expecting some big plot twists and cooler stuff to happen given the film's subject and presentation, but was underwhelmed with it by the end. They introduce all those cool characters and toy with the concept of what's real and what's not but at the end of the day they follow a straight-forward story (compared to what it could've been anyway) and most characters are pretty two dimensional.

When they said they'd be spending 10 years in the deepest level I thought they'd actually do that and start losing grip of reality some years later, but it ended up being just a few action-packed hours. When they talk about the limbo and all the crazy consequences of messing with dreams you think it's leading to something big, but nothing really bad happens and the Japanese guy just agrees to come back to reality without any real tension or reason for him dying (I guess it's some sort of punishment for him?). You have a thriller questioning what is real and what is not but the closest it gets to being that is a cheap ending shot. I'm not sure how else to explain it, but I kept expecting more and just getting something predictable (I felt the same with the Prestige).

But aside from that, it is a really engaging and fun movie. Definitely my favorite Nolan film so far.

My dad got me a job at his company when I was a school. It was a boring data entry job but I stayed there for 2 years because the hours were flexible and the little extra money was nice. All I did was take hand-written invoices and typed them into an inventory application. At first they did not have such an application so I built one myself using Access, but as they opened more branches and I had to manage more data they purchased an off-the-shelf system. Every day I would get hundreds of invoices and most of them were written in a hurry and you have to figure out what they say. It is very easy to make mistakes like entering 100 instead of 10 for some quantity.

This kind of job could easily be automated by having the invoices entered to the system at the sale points when the purchase is made. It was a small office with 3 people and since there was no place for me my desk was in some medicine storage room which had to be kept cold. Sitting alone from 6 to 2 in a refrigerator was terrible. On the other hand, you don't have that much choice when you are starting out. Having worked 3 jobs after that, it seems that you (or at least I) can never be content, with few exceptions jobs are not meant to be fun. There are better environments and there are careers you care about, but you'll always have annoying coworkers, a stupid boss, bad customers, small desk or some other annoyance that will be exaggerated because you have to deal with it on daily basis.

So what you do is get the most out of what you're doing now, and look for better opportunities. In the worst case, a job would teach you some basic people skills that are useful in life. It might also gives you some perspective on things. Even if you don't get anything from your job, it's not worth getting depressed about something temporary. As cheesy as it might sound, being positive about things is better for you in the long run.

Edit:
Speaking of making the most of what you've got and being positive. Even if you're stuck in a mind numbing job, there are probably other interesting jobs in the same place you work, and if you talk to people you might learn about them. For example, when I worked in data entry I used to talk to several accountants who worked in an office next door, and I learned a lot about what they do (mostly out of boredom, and sometimes because I had to prepare reports for my boss). I got a developer job later, and since we were developing financial applications that knowledge was useful after all.

today i forgot my flash drive in a computer lab and 30 minutes later i remembered it and went back to get it and it wasn't there. its pretty cheap and not that important but it had some files i needed. i was telling someone about it and we were talking about how whoever took it might have thought "if i didn't take it someone else would have". that's a terrible way to think because if i found someone else's stuff i'd have asked or gave it to someone who'd ask (professor, lab assistant, security, etc.) so in that case you are the someone else who would have taken it.  people who lose stuff often go back and ask about them, especially if they're valuable.

if it was an expensive music player i'd probably be pretty angry. dont be a dick man

I like how the video starts with "From the mind of Robert Dodd" when it's a complete LBP ripoff. Don't get me wrong, I actually like it and think you did an impressive job, but that particular line, instead of something simpler like "A Robert Dodd Game", was just funny.

But the photorealistic CGI technology James Cameron perfected for Avatar could easily be used for other, even more mind-blowing purposes — like, say, bringing Humphrey Bogart back to life, or making Clint Eastwood look 35 again. "How about another Dirty Harry movie where Clint looks the way he looked in 1975?" Cameron suggests.

(CNN) -- James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

Quote
"Ever since I went to see 'Avatar' I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it," Mike posted. "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.' "

Other fans have expressed feelings of disgust with the human race and disengagement with reality.

Quote
"When I woke up this morning after watching Avatar for the first time yesterday, the world seemed ... gray. It was like my whole life, everything I've done and worked for, lost its meaning," Hill wrote on the forum. "It just seems so ... meaningless. I still don't really see any reason to keep ... doing things at all. I live in a dying world."

I feel guilty because I want to go see the movie again :(

I wouldn't do it though, it's just too expensive and too long.

I don't understand why so many are apparently offended by this story. We've seen the exact same thing dozens of times before and I don't remember people raging about it back then. Avatar copied from many different films. The influences from Dances with Wolves and even Dinotopia (lol) are extremely apparent.

Have you seen Dances with Wolves? While the main character comes to appreciate the native american culture and gradually becomes a respected member of the tribe, he never becomes their de facto leader or lead them in a war against the white man. If I remember correctly, he warns them and advises them to leave their village like Jake does, but they end up doing exactly that (surprise!) . It's a much more realistic movie and the protagonist is more of a spectator than a legendary warrior who is destined to save the tribe.

I read that essay before going to see Avatar and it's pretty accurate. The movie also references the war in Iraq and 9/11 but without making any real point. I'd still go for the spectacle, like I said.

James Cameron wants to make two more sequels. I don't know what to think about that, but I guess it's hard to make a story as generic as the original. Terminator 2 was much better than the first. Speaking of which, Avatar had certain parts (and music) that reminded me of Terminator and Alien. Just having Weaver with her scary Alien 4 smile in 3D was creepy at points!

it looks like a video game... and not in a good way

I was wrong. I really enjoyed it.

The plot is dumb (Dances with Wolves in space, but not as good), but it's was a great experience overall. I can see why some people wouldn't like it, but I did. It's more of an amazing experience rather than a great movie.

About it being a video game, the story is dumb and unoriginal but still works. James Cameron is a talented director and it shows. I'll admit that the technology is the main appeal though. Can't wait for a movie using similar technology to tell an original and not-as-predictable story.

Things like 9/11, American Magic, GW Troubadours, Breakfast Club and ugh even Crap Shack

I just don't think these things are good basis on their own, it's having them in the context of the rest of GW which makes them really cool, if you know what I mean. 9/11 and American Magic were forums I checked, among other forums, not the sole reason to come to GW.
