They just recently ported this awesome old PC game to DS. For those of you who don't know, Jagged Alliance is a tactical RPG that came out in the 90s. In it you take command of a squad of 8 mercenaries, who you handpick, and each one has their own personality, abilities, etc. I won't say too much about it, cause honestly anyone who cares will know all about it anyway. Basically you have to take over an island, which you do by taking each section by force with your mercenaries, and then hire guards to guard the area, and tappers to tap the trees, earning you money from the valuable sap they get out of them. Anyway, the port is really well done, and the game is still incredibly awesome.

I like how they didn't get new art for the title screen.  Look at that lady's hair.

That's a prerelease screen I think, the title screen is different, but still in the same art style and everything.

Jagged Alliance is the bestest, I remember how I used to hire all the social rejects, fatties, wimps and gays and made them swim across the ocean but they never quite made it.

The actual game is pretty solid too, but if you wanna play efficiently the selection for your crew narrows down a lot because most of the mercs are jokes or just too expensive. I think everyone who played this used Ivan and Lynx as killing machines, Needle or Doc as medics and Spec as the repair man who never participates in any missions and Jimmy as the lockpick dude.

This is one of the best old games! I can't believe nothing has cloned it or ripped it off. I mean, I'd LOVE a rip off if it was done right, because it's such a novel concept and the original (and sequel) were executed so well, right down to the fake laptop and internet browser.

Am I wrong? Is there a modern Jagged Alliance clone?

They ruined Ivan Dolvich by having him speak English in the sequel.

There is no modern Jagged Alliance clone.
It seems to loose anything it had when they translate it to 3d, Or take away the squared movement.

So is this an exact port of the original that came before Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games, or is it sort of a condensed version of the entire series? In addition to that, were Jagged Alliance and Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games even different games at all?

If it is anything like the original it is bound to come out great. I never really liked Jagged Alliance 2 as it was sort of Diablo meets Command & Conquer and revolved around taking over sectors and managing resources rather than training mercs and putting them through missions.

This is looking super duper sweet though.

I would say Deadly games is like Xcom terror from the deep.
It uses the same engine, Same system, Afew little polishes here and there.
But Deadly games lacked the main screen of the first and i think it also had a map editor.
It was basically extra missions some new guns and new mercs.

Im a bit upset and a bit glad they haven't upgrade the games graphics.
On the one hand i think it would've been interesting if all the mercs were individually sprited. But on the other, That they are sticking so close to the original makes me warm and fuzzy inside. i hope it sells well and that xcom is next.

I liked jagged alliance 2 but only after a slew of Updates and mods changed pretty much everything about it.

I think Silent Storm is the most modern game (2003, so not too modern)  with similarities. Fallut Tactics (2001) also did some things JA2 did, though I guess not as well.

I wish the genre was bigger though. It's such a starved genre you'll play almost anything (Soldiers at War, Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate)
"I'm just a nationalistic Swedish-speaking Finn"
"Aivan, mutta suomalaiset juovat toki olutta."
I never forget an Insult nor do I forget a compliment.

So is this port legitimately good?  I have been looking at it but have been hesitant.

There are actually a few recent entries into the genre that are pretty good:

- Silent Storm is excellent (5 years old?)
- Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge had bad reviews but I have heard it is okay after patches (this was originally a JA remake)
- Dawn of War II single-player is actually a squad-based strategy game and is excellent (loot drops, levels, sector control etc) and not an RTS

I think there are more but you have to search?  They come out but they don't have much advertising and they are usually from Russia.

Yeah, the interface takes a little getting used to, but it's fine once you're used to it. I've never played the first, but I'm told it's by and large a faithful port.
