Well, looks like Sony are following Nintendo's example and are releasing a revamped, although seemingly uglier version of the Playstation Portable.

That's the first thing I thought. The second thing was the fact that it still uses that retarded 'button' design for the d pad.

Don't get me wrong, PSP is still my favorite console, but come on. Fuck corporate identity. I don't care if they've been using that design for their controllers for over ten years. It's still impossible to hit diagonal with any kind of accuracy. They had the foresight to add an analog stick, but that too always suffered from a horrible design and it looks like it only got worse. I hope they loosened it up a bit at the very least. The older versions always had my thumb cramping after ten minutes.

psp is the best console because its easily DIY hackable. free games are the best games. plus it emulates most other consoles really well

Wow.
On one hand, it really DOES look ugly. I actually like the current PSP look. It has class, that has... well, no class anyway. Looks like a knock-off portable system by Tiger or something.
Yeah, the analog looks incredibly uncomfortable, not just in a bad spot... but down rather than out? Beh!
Plus, it looks incredibly awkward to hold even, makes the PSP (which is kind of awkward in its own right) look like a silk glove.
What's the point, I wonder? Did they add image morphing software and a PS Eye? Fuck!

At first I thought this was a joke, but then I clicked on the link, it looks fucking ugly, and why the hell did they decide to put the start and select buttons in that specific part of the console when they could have easily put on another analog stick, which would improve FPS controls by TEN FOLD. I think that if I was to hold this I would drop this easily. Why is it so thin when you slide it out? Is there a purpose for that? I think my hands will turn into claws after playing on that thing.

yeah exactly. it's easily my favorite console by a wide margin just because it is all FREE and very easy but even beyond that with the snes and ps1 emulators it probably has the best library lol. there are some good psp games as well. no one talks about crush but i like it a lot.

but the analog stick is fuckin annoying. on the original psp, i think it FUNCTIONS well, but the positioning is dumb. the way you have to grip the psp isnt conducive to putting your thumb down that far and moving it with accuracy. they should've swapped the analog stick and the d-pad on the original one, and they should've done that on this new one too. most games use the analog stick as the main means of control; there's no reason it should not be positioned as the MAIN MOVEMENT CONTROL where the d-pad currently is. the d-pad should be moved off to the side like the analog stick so you can still use it to browse menus and shit. personally i have no problems with the d-pad because i don't play fighters or games where moving diagonally is regularly necessary, but if you do then i could see why you'd hate the d-pad. sony is the king of making pretty solid products with like 2-3 really stupid design choices, man. what is wrong with them

i might buy this but only if it's really cheap, can be hacked, and can do everything my current psp does, including play the same games (emulators included, not just psp games). the 16gb internal memory is neat. if it doesn't do that then i don't really give a shit! obviously it can play psp games, but without a umd drive, i don't know how your CURRENTLY OWNED GAMES will transfer. all my psp games are on my computer so as long as i can transfer them via usb it's fine and i'm sure it'll eventually be hacked by somebody but it kinda sounds like theyre fucking over people who actually bought their games?? that would be hilarious.

^ This is a fan mockup of a theoretical PSP2 that has been floating around for months now it seems that sony has created something similar but at the same time, lost out on the beauty factor entirely. How much more desirable does that look really, they should listen to their fans.

The mockup is worse even though it looks nice. It has absolutely no grip to it at all and would probably be a pain to use for even 30 minutes.

No point in getting this unless you don't have a PSP. You can get an 8GB stick for cheap now, which is enough for your media as long as you swap every few months.

i don't think the original psp is so hard to hold. the only thing that gives me problems is the analog stick. also yeah that fan mockup is absurd. look where the left and right triggers are. it would be awful to use and way worse than this version.

I didn't mind the analog once I tore off the knob grip. Shouldn't have to modify it to make it useful though

Fuck, I can't believe they're doing this. It looks like such shit. Hopefully there'll be a massive fan outburst at this announcement and they'll redesign it like when they tried to give us a PS3 Boomarang controller.

and I'm agreeing that the PSP is the best system because it's so easy to emulate and pirate shit on.

EDIT:

throw one of these in your regular PSP and you've got something similar to what's going on with this new one.

Also, I don't know if this is good or bad, but it has no UMD drive. Aren't games played that way?

that 32gb card is pretty wild. that's not even a bad price considering that is probably more space than you would ever need for GAMES on one. i mean it blows for listening to music because the controls are awful and the hold button is stupidly placed but i guess if you watched MOVIES or some shit on it you might be able to use it all.
