the main characters are one of the primary reasons i dislike the GTA series, especially since they're so poorly conveyed.  "i'm a deep criminal guy who kills because he has to, watch as this cutscene shows me considering the ethical implications of murdering the friend that portrayed me... now to go kill 30 bikers in a park to get the 'you killed the bikers' achievement"

the other reason is that the gameplay is never fun beyond fucking around and ramping your car off shit, but that's another issue

Speaknig of GTA IV, using ENB can make it look really good, especialy this one, I would be tempted to buy GTA 4 JUST so I can use ENB on it, though it would get boring very quickly as I've always found GTA games to be dull.

My PC definitely could not run that. (it could hardly run 4)

In any case, I like the GTA series. In fact every GTA game (except maybe the GBA game) I've played, I've liked. That's GTA1, 2, 3, VC, SA, 4, EFLC, and Chinatown Wars. I never tried the 2D london games or the PSP 'stories' games though.

I liked them all for different reasons though. I liked the older games as a kid for the 'do whatever and screw around' aspect. These days I like them for the story and challenge.

See, that's exactly why I couldn't get into the game, I just couldn't get into the story, for me the story is everything, without some narative to move along I get bored of fast. Some games without a plot I'm fine with such as WOT or ME3 Multi player but only in short bursts. The exception for me is sandbox games like EVE, Mine craft or planetside but that's beucase you make your own narative, your own goals which is fun.

*shrugs* I think the stories are decent. I mean 3 and VC were simplistic (one a generic revenge story the other rags to riches) but SA, 4, and EFLC all had a decently deep stories for video games. Hell arguably better than many movies in a few cases. But this is just opinion. And everyone has has one.

Gameplay-wise 3 through SA where pretty terrible when compared to today's games though, and while GTA4 & EFLC's cover based shooting was decent I'll admit its driving (something you do a lot in the game) was really wonky and actually kind of unrealistic.

But yeah overall I think the GTA games are good. Though GTA4 definitely did not deserve the rave reviews that it got.

Though I thought it funny when my Zelda obsessed friends got pissed over the fact that GTA4 dethroned Ocarina of Time as the highest reviewed game of all time.

My main irk about the GTA series is it's becoming too serious. I mean look back at the oldies, you could integrate a good story into pseudo-realistic worlds. you don't have to make it too dark and movie-like in theme.

IDK I kind of like dark.

I mostly just tolerate non-serious unless its actually funny, then I actually like it... but that is rare in any media, let alone video games.

Then again I am playing Ratchet and Clank, and its definitely not a serious game.

fyi don't bother playing a peaceful/stealthy run. it's apparently not worth it in any way.

From what I've heard you're severely gimped and don't have many options, basically limiting you only one or two of the special abilities. And you aren't rewarded for it either, at least not in a way that makes it worth it. I haven't played the game so I don't remember a lot of specifics, but it's usually mentioned in most reviews. I think this one talks about it a bit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRrM3RI0a4I&feature=plcp somewhere in the first half.

Basically you should probably play a non-stealth playthrough first, since you're more likely to enjoy that if you enjoy it at all, and do a stealth playthrough afterward to avoid spoiling the game outright.

which part. why isnt it? several reviews I saw/read pointed that part out, seemed like most people agreed about that part, I'd be interested to hear if the stealthy playthrough is actually worth it.

See my post immediately before that. Unless you are actually confused as to what I have referring to, on this page (http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html), GTA4 was above Ocarina of Time for a few months or so. Reviews slowly trickled out for GTA4 and began bringing it down, explaining its current placement under ocarina again.
