pretty far in final fantasy 13 now. on the whole, i don't think it's nearly as awful as it's made out to be. it's nowhere near where the hype would suggest it should be, and i can really only enjoy it at all because i had absolute zero expectations for it, but this game could have been so much worse. some of the character ideas almost work, sometimes the gameplay is fun, and there are a few short sections of the game that are fairly engaging. to be honest, this is more than i can really say for most games.
there have been other final fantasy games that were really nowhere near being acceptable, but i feel like this one wasn't awfully far from being a decent game. the story is awful and they pretty much give up on character development early on in the game and the locations are atrociously utilized most of the time, but i've still found the game kinda vaguely entertaining enough to keep at it. i more or less wanted to hate this game a lot more than i do, but they keep the inherently obnoxious nature of recent jrpgs in check to the point where i can at least digest it. outside of the disgustingly superficial way the characters are physically designed, i feel like they don't particularly over-glamorize them, which is something games have a nauseating habit of doing.
part of me wonders if the backlash for this game is primarily from people who are JUST NOW realizing that the final fantasy series has turned to shit. like they were too young to objectively evaluate final fantasy x and just enjoyed it for [thought ][/thought] and are just now old enough to see games for what they really are. fortunately i am a COOL CAT and have been on this bandwagon for a long time, so i've grown to expect a lot worse from these games.
that said, i don't want anybody thinking this is some glowing endorsement of this game. DO NOT GO OUT AND BUY THIS GAME EXPECTING ANYTHING FROM IT. if you're going to try this game, borrow it from somebody, or wait until you can get it for just a couple bucks on ebay. it's not really some worthwhile expenditure of your time, even by game standards. but i think if you go into it expecting absolutely nothing, and are really in the mood for a jrpg, it'll be moderately surprising. sometimes it clicks, most of the time it doesn't. that's about the par for the course.
