what's the best dragon age? what's the best fantasy game? I've always been hesitant to play any 3D fantasy game not set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, but I'm thinking of giving one a shot. not that faerun is a particularly interesting place, it's mostly pretty bad, but it's got tons LORE that development teams like black isle and obsidian have been able to harness to create a game world that really feels alive, inhabited, and connected to something bigger than the game itself. similarly the definite rules and boundaries that come along with being a d&d campaign setting also help make the world feel real. a world where anything can happen is not actually very interesting in a fantasy setting
I think MMOs sort of hint at this sense of THINGS MATTER but afaik none have come close to attaining it, probably because of the incentives and gameplay goals they provide the player. actually no, Trickster Online, that Korean anime-style mmorpg actually sort of managed this for a while but later on I guess they found it more profitable to just milk owners of upper-level characters of cash
