I remember when we were younger this place was pretty active, internet communities have changed in the years I guess. The forums were always pretty something-awful lite but still kind of cool. The only people left on the forums now seem to be people whove been here for an extremely long time and refuse to let go. An entire rehaul of the frontsite didn't even rouse interest. What happened?

The focus can be changed to make the site less niche, gaming world is a pretty vague title. Seems like the site is lasting based on nostalgia.

I think GW's decline is due in large part to the passing of the RPG Maker fad. Unless Enterbrain gives us a truly powerful and incredibly easy to use RPG Maker in the next little while, I don't see things picking up here.

Unless we change GW to FPSW. First Person Shooter World... Because apparently they're all the rage now!

They were last year but the FPS genre is actually starting to slow down somewhat...

I don't care, this site is becoming FPSW immediately.

In all honesty though, they still are stupidly popular. Just check out images of a few games on the upcoming release lists at GameFAQs and you'll release just how many new games are shooters.

Thankfully most of them will flop.

I think another factor in how GW has changed is the fact that the majority of our userbase has grown older and matured, giving up their past hobby of game making and some even video games altogether. Many of us have jobs/real life, and can't spend as much time on GW talking about games.

A question I want to ask everyone though, why did you give up game making? Was it laziness, or some other factor?

For myself personally, I think the reason is quite selfish now that I reflect on it. While I was working on creating games primarily for myself so that I could feel a sense of accomplishment at completing one of my youth life's goals, I now realize that another major factor that was pushing me along was that I wanted to give something to the community that they would enjoy. That first drive is still there for me now, but that second one isn't. The majority of GWers don't care about amateur game making anymore it seems, so even if I spent dozens of more hours finishing up my game(s) and releasing them, would they just fall upon deaf ears for the large part? Yes, this is a dumb selfish reason, but that's the sad truth in my case. There are so many other things that I need to do in life that game making isn't high up there in the priority list.

This realization has made me reopen RPG maker in the past few days and I have started working on my games again strangely. I guess I just can't let all this hard work go to waste.

What ended it for me would be a lack of motivation. Getting the right graphics, right music, right resources.. It's a difficult thing to do and it doesn't always work out the way you want it to at all.

i had the opposite problem, as I would always get the coding done for my battle systems (eg: I had a working MGS style system in rm2k3) but would stop after I would struggle to find graphics that I needed because frankly put I am terrible at making graphics and what I needed pretty much didn't exist in the current resource bases on the internet

I stopped making games because my first game was too ambitious, and I lost the second half of my second game.  I couldn't get the motivation to redo all that work I had done.

I'm not denying that they are stupidly popular still. In fact I'll even admit my favorite game of all time is a FPS and in general I like FPS games. I've been playing Far Cry 2 a lot lately for instance. But the amount of FPS releases it starting to slow just enough to be noticeable, could be a fluke though.

Though I don't quite understand why it is a good thing that a bunch will flop. Yeah, a lot of them will but that isn't a good thing is it? I guess one could say that you want them to fail so that eventually games in the genres you like could possibly come back strong again.

I've been wanting that for Car Combat games... but I've pretty much lost all hope after the remake of V8 was so lackluster. Maybe the PS3 Twisted Metal will bring it back (if it really exists), but I'm not getting my hopes up. I'll just have to lean on Burnout and Flatout. They can sometimes be said to be pretty close, just lacking mounted weapons.

Also, I never gave up game making. but I never was into RPG maker in the first place. I was a gamemaker guy, came here for resources, hung out in the forums for a bit and stayed for the interesting community. Popping in and out. It also seems that the community sheds a lot of this people and then regrows with some other random people, most of the time the most opinionated stay.... I think that is what makes it so interesting to read sometimes. Anyway, I'm not lying about not giving up on game making, I'm in College for it now.

EDIT: Though sometimes IDK know if I made the right choice, I have been going for a while and still feel under qualified for any job in the game industry. I'm to lazy I guess... procrastinate to much.
