David Lynch gave a talk at my college once. It was funny because he was actually on a double-bill sort of thing with SIXTIES FOLK TROUBADOR DONOVAN and it seemed like the most arbitrary pairing imaginable. It turned out they were kind of touring together because they were both involved in that transcendental meditation thing. Lynch gave a good talk and then Donovan came out to play a set and I left because life is too short for an evening with Donovan and on my way out I passed David Lynch having a smoke by himself at the doorway it was a pretty neat moment.

Also I dunno I really wish I could get more into that thing of appreciating the ISOLATED MOMENTS more because it seems like a kind of noble way of thinking about this stuff but I mostly can't. If I'm interested in what the person is trying to say or the overall personality/tone of the thing then I'm a lot more forgiving of flaws but if I think the whole thing is worthless overall then trying to appreciate what could have been or fleeting moments of potential interest just feels like lying to myself, and it makes me sad that I have to MAKE BELIEVE in order to get something valuable out of it. The context of the thing drags it down. I mean it's less to do with the motives of stuff or whatever because for all I know all those weird british stopmotion shows I loved were put together by the most mercenary fucks on the planet and it wouldn't make a lot of difference to me but I just find it really hard to appreciate stuff that feels like just an accidental byproduct of something shitty.

I don't see it so much as like MAKE BELIEVE as the director/etc can't possibly consider every single thing and maybe they dismiss something genuinely interesting as just 'cool shit' when there was some kind of subconscious intent behind it and just RAW things are more interesting before people start taking things out or putting things in. I also don't like people who are so intent on conveying a singular message or theme when it's something like Hideo Kojima isn't cloning scary??

I mean that's kind of why I'm into electronic bullshit I consider it like cartoons if you really want to sneak something really depressing/emotional in there it's easier to get away with it because it's bleep bloop. And sometimes I'll intend from the start to make something upbeat and it transmogrifies into some weird shit somewhere in the process of making it. I also try not to even REMEMBER the intent I had at the time if I even had one, like if it's an egg mcmuffin hanggliding theme music as long as it results in music I'm good because I don't think the initial thought is the point

all these IDM dudes I consider them like sort of David Lynch-y as far as the persona they give off to the public. Is this guy just completely nuts or does he do everything on purpose did he actually see some kind of consultant on the exact way to fashion his hair etc etc CAREFULLY CRAFTED MEDIA PERSONA. But yeah that's sort of why Boards of Canada turns me off now their ways of evoking a response seem kind of manipulative even without reading up too much with the backmasking and Waco etc. they basically just throw everything and see if it sticks, when you really look at the stuff they put in their songs

Yeah I do like that kind of almost subliminal weirdness like in old music and games etc. I guess it's more a question of whether it's something actually present or something I'm just projecting onto it. It's like the difference between Fletcher Hanks comics which are genuinely bizarre and creepy and uh just regular superhero stuff where you still see people going Talking Gorillas LMAO but it's just some boring genre stuff that happens to be strange. Or like anime I guess. If you found it without any prior knowledge it'd be easy to be blown away by you know giant robots and talking animals but inside the actual context all that stuff is really generic and rote. I don't want to pretend that context doesn't exist just to see that stuff the original way, or give credit to some level of imagination which was never even remotely there in the first place!

yeah this is really my favorite example of subliminal weirdness aside from the indecipherable lyrics what makes it so weird? Is it just the context and he was actually just making an rpg sort of tune for fun and gave it ominous title etc.

I agree about appreciating isolated ideas and I think this is kind of a crucial part of living amongst fellow human beings and experiencing art and entertainment. where you personally draw the line on what's kinda bad and what's awful is up to you

isolated ideas can also ruin something that's kind of good, like adding tricky vocals to any song.

? I mean if you mean 'ruining the mystery' mostly in a SPOILER way
well sort of, though I think you can know what's coming up next without it completely losing its mystery (I wish I never used this word!!). SPOILERs are mostly about the plot while wonder and curiosity can come from any facet of whatever you're experiencing.

awwww that is such bullshit

maybe "rusty's nail". I'll give you that one, that one ain't so great. its not terrible but it ain't great. But "hurt" is the coolest cover ever and he put so much into that cover you can fuckin' hear it. Dude recorded the song on his fuckin deathbed and he put more raw emotion and sadness into that song then reznor ever could.  EVER

fucking trent reznor sung that song on a stool infront of a gigantic projector displaying painful images strung out of fucking coke or some shit and cash sung it on his way to the grave with only his age and a guitar and you could see the pain in his fucking eyes.
