That is bad even for supermarket food standards. This is supposed to be takoyaki bread but it doesn't resemble the original in the slightest.

I still don't get how those old-school racing games worked unless some autistic savant drew every conceivable angle you could be driving at individually. well RAD RACER looks doable but like whoa there are canyons and shit seems harder to pull off

I guess the canyon wall is just SKY really (how the graphics engine thinks of it) but still also the left side of the road you can see the drop from further up the road and the game seems to 'know' how far away that is

I guess also with those bushes on the side of the road we take it for granted now like bushes in 3D games need to be INTACT when you go back over there not fade away at a distance of 3 feet away when that isn't a realism issue I guess you can just throw shit all over the place

Yeah, after seeing this I was curious so I took quick looks at all of the gameplay videos of every Test Drive game (as well as the reviews for them). Almost all of them were Terrible to Mediocre scores-wise and looks-wise and the few that got OK scores AND actually looked decently fun in the videos were done with outside developers or engines. Test Drive Unlimited is like the only in house release of the series that has gotten mostly positive scores.

The series has changed developers a lot though, so its hard to really place the blame on any one developer... the series was just plagued with bad luck I guess. Though probably not in the sales department since the games have been around forever.

One of the test drive games I looked at also reminded me of Demolition Racer. God that was such an awesome game. Its such a shame so few people played it or even know what it was. Hell it holds up pretty damn well. About a year ago my little brother played it for the first time and thought it was fun enough to play for a couple of hours.

Any one else here played Demolition Racer? Or maybe another action/racing game that holds up really well today or that deserved more attention when it was released?

I think the games looked pretty good for their respective release dates, and I think these reviewers might be taking them a bit too seriously. A lot of PC games back then weren't meant to be very elaborate, and that's partly because most PCs were installed in a corporate environment. I actually made this video just to show what I think was a pretty good 1987 PC game and one that's actually fun to play.

i bought a netbook yesterday. I was hoping to be able to take on college once again without bringing a goddamn laptop with me everywhere but i guess things done changed and you literally need that shit with you on campus now. I take a bus and carry a bunch of heavy books with me so there's no fuckin' way I am gonna be lugging my wife's macbook around so I decided a cheap lightweight netbook is the way to go. it's one of them new N550 dual core atom things so I figure if I throw ubuntu on it I should have a pretty good web-browser/document creation station.

Some netbooks, like my Compaq Mini 110c, have good OSX support as well if you're okay with spending a couple of hours to get it to work properly. Not sure if yours does though, but you should be able to look it up easily. Netbooks are pretty cool, particularly if you have a phone with 3G that supports tethering.

Why did you post this? What is your take? You agree with him and his points?

BTW, I disagree with some, agree with some, and in many cases feels he should elaborate on exactly what he means on some points.

Also, Reading it, It made me think about Deus Ex only toned down technology-wise. Like, hobo's everywhere. World covered in urban ruin. God-like evil rich overlords. For some reason this was the imagery that I got from this.

Yeah, I cringe every time I see a netbook-- the keyboards are so small and the keys themselves seem so...flimsy.

I suppose you've got to sacrifice SOMETHING to get it so tiny though.

How is the battery life?

It's simply going to feel weird and out-of-control-ish, the way it does now, because too many things are changing too quickly. The reason the future feels odd is because of its unpredictability. If the future didn't feel weirdly unexpected, then something would be wrong.
didn't i write this way in 2003 when i was a staff member reviewing rm2 games

I do kinda I guess cuz the keyboard wasn't too bad when I demo'd one. :> idk it is a little cramped but its not too much of an issue

The keys are actually pretty sturdy, the latest ASUS netbooks have pretty good "chiclet" style keyboards that are ~95% the size of full-sized ones so it's not too bad.
The battery life is pretty great, it's officially 13 hours but realistically 8-10. The screen is matte so I can keep the brightness down without having to worry about glare washing out the screen while it's dimmed and that really stretches the battery.

My wife has a macbook, and I'm not really interested in forcing OSX on to it because I need something really reliable. It'd be interesting to see how well it runs though because it is the new dual core HT atom chip w/DDR3 which would probably smooth out some of the jerkiness and slowdown that a lot of OSX installations on netbooks have. Ubuntu is a pretty good match for the thing and what I want to use it for: light on resources, secure, and robust enough for simple document/image creation/formatting and web surfin'. Plus I need something that's as light as possible because I have like a 2 hour bus commute almost every day and need to keep as much shit off my back as I possibly can.

idk it's not really so much about agreeing with every bit as it is about thinking how the things he says have at least a core of truth and a distinct cause inside society.

Yeah, Mac OS X stuff isn't made for the tiny resolutions that these things have, but other than that it can work fine. (I believe Adobe Illustrator wouldn't even install because it required at least 800x600.) Problem is you have to think twice about updating because the next update might cause your video driver to be deactivated. So this is something you can try if you're feeling experimental. But triple booting OSX, XP and Ubuntu is pretty awesome.
