Actually I kind of want to check out shows like the X-Files the Twilight Zone some old Doctor Who or whatever SERIAL SCI-FI SHOWS, because while they're all probably terrible I think the constraints of coming up with weird shit or ideas or aliens every week means they sometimes stumble upon really uncanny or resonant shit without realising it.
this was basically my theory about classic video games and not so much the lo-fi graphics themselves because stuff like passage is super gay feels like oh let me just throw some retro graphics at it I think it's more that partially because the artists were complete amateurs part bad tools at the time part graphics couldn't convey things as well as today/all pixelated but it probably resulted in some really creepy shit or whatever. I think the bosses in Lagoon creeped me out even though the rest of the game sucked. Also when you fall to your death in the game you like sort of like fall with very bad perspective so it looks like you're shriveling away or something a lot of the music in that game was weird too. Really I think that Ghana movie poster stuff I was obsessed with a while back is sort of like some random old videogame art and more authentic to that feeling than like some computer nerd in 2010 making an indie retro game. I mean in both cases I really get the feeling like they just at the most basic level were like 'draw something scary' and didn't worry about any rules or anything and basically it can be creepy or hilarious or both because it was just somebody drawing whatever the fuck out of their subconscious and not worrying about 'style' or whatever SNES/Genesis graphic style was basically just whatever you can get to display on the screen
is there like a directory/database of final bosses from videogames I'd like to see if there are some ones that terrified me in childhood that I've forgotten about now
Edit: not all of them but I can seriously imagine some ghana posters fitting perfectly as character face portrait for an rpg or something like Shadowrun had some good face graphics in like this semi-realistic could've been traced from a photo-style but badly and with weird distorted colors
faxanadu had awesome faces too and I think they moved
Edit: this screen is awesome
http://www.neshq.com/games/f/faxanadu/800x600-game.giffaxandu the game where I thought my cartridge was dirty but that's just how the graphics were
I think NES days creeped me out in general at least by the SNES the colors looked right and not all these sickly tones
also videogames were doing the whole 'jerky movement' schtick before The Ring and other movies popularized it as a horror technique
