damn I thought it was one of those text-to-speech programs for a sec

there's some pretty classic voices on this, you should email one of them

http://www.archive.org/details/20000_leagues_under_the_seas_librivox

try track 2, 25, 35, 37

there was some other reader on some other story who sounded classic too but in more of a GANDALF way than gravelly-sounding

I think part 35 is the same guy who said VEGETABLE HUMMUS and I don't know it just makes me laugh the way he says it

Edit: http://www.archive.org/details/aesop_fables_volume_nine_librivox yeah 6 was the gandalf-sounding guy although he sounds more like THE BRAIN now that I think of it

also I thought it might've been a text-to-speech program because it's mono (only in one channel anyway) and the excerpt seemed like the right kind of length like using some shareware and the limit is 300 characters or something

oh sorry, you chose an excerpt for him, I thought he did for a sample clip

The guy has a good voice for this sort of thing, it just sounds like he was reading what you wrote EXTREMELY LITERALLY like Readplease2000 or whatever that program was called might do it. Why not just ask him to read it again but more fluidly?

Haha. I love how he sighs eyes in "and his eyes burned too."
There was alot of feeling right there. Of seduction to wild, steamy sex.

I assumed he added the static in an attempt to make the recording unusable.

The static in the recording is on my end and can be altered. But, this will give you an idea.

It's not exactly how I'd like this recorded. It's late and I'm tired.......

It sounded like Microsoft Sam at first, but this guy has a very professional quality voice.  He sounds like that movie preview guy.  I find professional voices (especially radio personalities) funny, and this is quite hilarious to listen to, but I don't see the "missing the point" you're getting at.  Most audio books are pretty neutral, it's kind of unprofessional to embellish.  Maybe you need some kind of emo to read this for you.

You can try if you'd like haha.  I'm thinking about not even doing a recorded reading anymore though.

But yeah, sure, send me a clip.  I'll check it out.

Sounds like a seductive William Shatner impression.
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.
