Soul Blazer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_Blazer) is a great action RPG and it's what gave me my love of RPGS. On snes

Also Final Fantasy mystic Quest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic_Quest) is a simplified role-playing game...designed for the entry-level player made by square, also snes.

Alundra 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alundra_2) PSX is also recommended, if he's prepared to emulate it on pc.
