So, I've recently thought about getting a second part time job to pay for my ridiculous lifestyle. I saw this ad in the newspaper today for a dishwasher. I've never washed a dish in my life. I have heard  a position like this is very awful. But, it seems like, really easy *puts 30 dishes in dishwasher and smoke weed with girlbones outside for 30 minutes*

Can anyone tell me how awful this job is? I am curious. Have any of you worked as a dishwasher? I need your opinions/thoughts.

You have to sit in my kitchen quietly and not tell our secrets.  That's what we require of our dishwasher.

I'm a busboy at a restaraunt, usually considered the lowest position, but man, I feel bad for the dishwashers man. Like my job is to throw out ppl's food if they dont finish and I give it to the dishwashers, which is like a big table filled with dishes. People just toss stuff at their counter/sink thing. They gave to scrap away all the extra bits of food. Its not like you just put it in dishwasher, you gotta scrub it down first. Also there are like little butter saucests that get thrown in and bits of food and stuff al over the sink, and since we are always pouring unifinished drinks in there it all adds up and collects into strange mixtures of french fries, butter, and milk/water, ice, macrooni, etc. People just toss full meals at them sometimes and they have to scrap it off.

Also you're a white boy and they speak espanol. They only get a limited time to eat/smoke J's,m because they are always needed and resatraunts are usually busy. Also when you come back, guess what? Huge ass pil.e of dishes man, it collects when they aint around/.

brb talking 2 friends bout it on aim.

king of games, i thought a dishwasher and bus boy did the same things. Hmm, maybe Iill try to apply as a bus boy instead. since it seems a little bit easier.

and no the job probably won't be "easy," it will probably be very boring and mentally stressful. it's not difficult work though.

depending on the place that you are working at, the conditions could be tolerable, or miserable (but never good, considering that you are a dishwasher in the first place).  You will probably have to get used to dealing with lots of hot water in the back of some kitchen that isn't air conditioned and you'll be wearing gloves and be getting all hot and sweaty

Ryan why are you so needlessly hostile :(

As far as dishwashing goes I would say avoid it and try to be a busboy just because that job is much better really. All you have to do is stand around and clear tables, and as long as you do a good job (quick and thorough I guess?) the waiters/waitresses give you a share of their tips.

Yeah they are required to give you part of their tips, that's how it works at my place. Gotta be on your toes, but sometimes no one comes in so there is not much to do. It's not hard but it can be tiresome because of back/legs standing up all the time and carrying heavy things etc.

Dishwashing is derogatory, thankless and pretty much an all-around shit job. No one wants to wash dishes, and I think the only way you'd enjoy doing it is if you had a friendly workplace, which is sort of rare in the restaurant business. I work as a chef and I see way too many dishwashers either getting pushed around or just walking about being generally miserable and hating their job/lives.

Do something else instead. Get a job waiting, marketing, selling shit or something else that requires little education.

Well I'm pretty sure it's well known that TFT is like what, 28?
The tone I picked up (and TFT too apparently!) is the former. BUT IF THAT'S NOT THE CASE, I use this post to apologize to Ryan in advance. Sorry bud.

totally depends what kind of restaurant you're working at. i currently wash dishes and wait at a sushi bar so as far as dishes go it's a pretty good gig, mostly just rice and raw fish. i just chill in back and listen to music most of the time which is fine so long as my general domain is clean.. some people get grossed out at the sight of mixed food though so if this is a problem for you then i'd take that into consideration. some days you'll get fucked by the cooks when they decide it's time to wash the grease filters or some shit thats really difficult to get clean, but other then those days its more or less an easy job.

also i hear dishwashing for large bodies like colleges and summer camps is terrible. massive amounts of dishes, pots, pans. washing in bulk is supposed to be the worst

you'll also probably hate your boss but that just comes with the territory of minimum wage work. fuck middle management. always.
