Most football riots and violence isn't really about football. Take for example the recent violence at the West Ham vs Millwall game; Two teams with a history of violence between their fans. Most of the hooligans turned up to the game (some didn't even attend) with the intention of fighting the other team. They didn't really care about the football at all, they just use it as an excuse to fight with other idiots.

Edit: Hooray my 5000th post was about football hooliganism.

League One Stockport drew 2-2 at Yeovil on Saturday. It was a result which took both teams on to six points so far in the season and was in many ways unremarkable.

What made it significant was that both the Stockport goals were scored by Hatters forward Carl Baker, taking his tally to nine goals for the season and making him the highest scorer in the country this season.

Just days earlier Stockport manager Gary Ablett had the unenviable task of breaking the news to Baker that the player's elder brother Michael had lost his battle against leukaemia.

Baker was under no pressure to play on Saturday but called Ablett on Thursday evening to say that he wanted to be part of the team.

..

At the end of the game Baker was sent over to the away supporters by Ablett. A couple of hundred had made the long trek south to Huish Park and they presented the striker with a card that everyone in the away end had signed.

Baker was hugged by many of them and I'm told that it was a genuinely emotional moment. For me, it is an example of what football is really all about.

I don't care about what happens in europe, what happens in here is annoying enough thank you very much

I don't like watching people chasing a ball for 90 minutes so it's subjectively boring

ANYWAY

Any of you guys pay any special attention to non-league football? I've been following AFC Wimbledon for a while because they're my "local" team and they're doing quite well (My actual local team plays in the COMBINED COUNTIES LEAGUE) and they've been. I don't really want to see them get into the football league because I like them where they are. Most of you will find that wierd but the true football fans here probably won't

yeah I always keep an eye on AFC wimbledon because they were a great idea and I see what you mean, at least if they stay lower they will never struggle and you can always watch them perform well. it was sad that Luton went down last season so I will be keeping an eye on them this season too.

I went to a few AFC games last season. It was great, you could pay a tenner and turn up on the day. It's a lot harder to get tickets these days, with so many season ticket holders you can only get to selected matches. I think they're getting attendences of about 4,000 now which is really good for that level.

I'm also a big MK Dons fan albeit ironically.

I support Newcastle.

Things aren't going my way lately. Just as well i'm a low level fan. I can't even remember the last time i watched a match from start to finish.

When I was in Austria we were eating at some gasthaus and suddenly there were two teams of guys having a proper league match like twenty feet away on some fenced in field. Just like that. That doesn't happen in Canada. We have house leagues and corporate leagues, but these guys were playing professional football at some really low level to represent their individual villages. It was awesome.

It is hard to support football in Canada!

All of my friends who like football are idiots, though, and there aren't that many of those, even. Once I was playing tennis with my friend at a nearby school's court and there was a pickup game going on on the field right next to us. I knew/was friendly acquaintances with most of the guys playing, too. We weren't allowed to join, though, since it was ASIANS ONLY. I am not kidding. There were Asians from every possibly group there, most of whom I had no idea even knew one another. So yeah, it's hard to get a game going.
