Hi, I'm doing an assignment that looks at the way our identity and language change on the internet, specifically in online games (with attention paid to MMORPGs).

My aim is to find out how our digital selves are different from our real-world counterparts, and why. Also other features such as networking (joining guild, making friends), language (the jargon of MMORPGs, language used by yourself and others) and other identity related topics are of interest (why you chose this class etc.)

If you can think of any other interesting questions, feel free to add them.

I'll have to note that there's a possibility I'll use any replies here in my assignment. If that's a problem please tell me you don't want your comments to be included.

Updated or new questions have an *

*Do you feel a sense of community in your game?

*How do you talk in, or about this game? (Are there message boards, chat, etc.)

*Do you share any in-jokes with people in your guild/game?

*What was your goal in this game? Is this goal similar to others who played this game?

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?

*How did you treat players that you disliked? How did you treat them or talk to them?

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?

*How do you know a player is an expert?

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?

*Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner? (Is there any jargon specific to your game of choice?)

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?

*Do you treat the game world as a real place in your mind? (This question is a little bit abstract, answer how you will)

Do your characters have different personalities?

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?

Did you ever roleplay in these games?

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
No, I am separate from most clans and whatever but generally play to a standard that earns their respect

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
I used to play Diablo 2 with my friends from real life

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Grinders and micromanagers who spend literally hours just playing and not having fun. I don't get it.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
I use the old "no swear insults" and belittle them with insulting questions and insinuations but stay polite to follow rules

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
"how do i spawn"

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
Respawn is really the only word I think is silly in real life. I don't play too many MMOs though.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I like support characters or, if it's impossible to find a good group, characters that can deal a lot of damage but not take so much (berserkers and the like)

Do you characters have different personalities?
No. They are all me.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
I talk in the game as I talk in real life, never the other way around.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
There is a time and a place for roleplaying, and usually it's hard to find other people who aren't douchewizards.

What do you think of roleplayers?
See above. Most roleplayers are not very good at it.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?

I play mmos for the social aspect of them so yeah joining a guild is one of my priorities... but most guilds dont take low lvls so you have to lvl up if you want to join any good ones, the ones with mostly low lvls disband really easy as low levels have more of a tendency to leave a guild.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?

I love helping out my guild mates or just random people I see in a dungeon,I always end up doing group/party quests.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?

People who only care about lvling up and not just playing for fun.

How did you treat players that you disliked?

I swore at them using internet slang and acted like a little kid.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?

Because they showed no skill even performing simple in-game tasks.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?

N/A

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?

I always make a Knigth/Heavy Armored dude because I like Strength about all,I hate casting spells or shooting arrows,I wish to kill my opopnent in one hit.

Do you characters have different personalities?

I try to make/act as original as posible while in the game, because you cant do that offline.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?

I do it all the time, which leads me to be isolated from non-players/people who dont wish to reveal that they play.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?

Yes,I roleplayed alot, makes the game more fun,and also allowed me to meet people with the same interests as me.

What do you think of roleplayers?

I think they are the virtual version of hippies, minus the drugs.

Wow this is going better than I expected, thanks for the input. I especially liked the aspergers part.

Please, do continue, people, the more information I get the easier it is to draw conclusions.

Thanks again.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I usually try to, but the social aspect is pretty important for me. That said I don't want to be in a shitty guild. Doing top level raids and competitive pvp is important too.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
Like a LAN party? Yeah, my friend who has played pretty much every MMO with me would bring his comp over and we'd play, my neighbor would join sometimes.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Only in Lineage II, the insanely skilled... stalkers/pkers. and sometimes the really overbearing guild leader who expects too much out of you.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
In this case they mostly spoke mandarin or korean so there wasn't much i could do. in game i just stayed in town for a while, warning people about them in chat.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
Usually they'll ask a stupid question or really suck at playing their class. Like they'd just be missing some very obvious element of their class.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
There was a time when I was an angsty teen and playing video games where I'd use all sorts of words like bitch faggot whore all of those. I mostly used those in CS and the Specialists, an HL mod... but I never really said these kinds of things in WoW. There was one time I was on an alt and I said it as a joke when I was dueling someone. They didn't know it was me and reported me, hah.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I usually tried to choose characters that have a diverse skill set or supporting roles. Usually these character types have interesting challenges to overcome and as a player they're really fun to play competitively with especially in pvp another favorite of mine. In Star Wars Galaxies I played a Carbineer... it had good CC but relatively weak single target capabilities. In Lineage II I played an orc shaman, again strong support. In Wow I played a druid... same deal, many talents, lots of ways to play.

Do you characters have different personalities?
I don't really think so. Through my MMO's I've usually only had one main character. Since I had stuck with each mmo for a long time (more than a year for ea) I changed over the course of that time due to real life and probably in game things. So.... just growing up.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
I probably wouldn't take as in depth with game vocab. I also don't really get into competitive fights in real life like I do in pvp battles... I definitely don't use as many curse words in real life.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
I joined a pvprp server in wow, it wasn't that interesting because i felt like i couldn't make any real friends since we were all just acting. i always laughed a little when that one dude would just explode in chat and shatter some people's rp.

What do you think of roleplayers?
it's great, i used to roleplay on these message boards.

ps I would read this if you haven't already it applies pretty well:

i have a lot of other resources like that one if you want, just send me a pm.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
No. Because I don't play games on the internet.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
No, unless you mean 'BDSM cyber sex in a dungeon party' or something, then no.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
WoW players in general.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Told them they have no life and are obviously fat.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
When people started calling dumb asses \/\/#0 typ l1ek d1z

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
I was afraid of sexual predators and fat people.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
No swearing. Fuck that shit, I love swearing. I got kicked out of a game.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
'no girls allowed.'

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
Fuckmeister. My favorite abilities are to jerk off to gain +1337 penis size in inches and fuck a girl which hangs my nutsack even lower.

Do you characters have different personalities?
One was the sweet, cute little innocent guy. The other was a demon fucker.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
Only if a hot chick played it.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
Nope. They're different because one of them are really fucking fat without a life, and the other is a rich millionaire who gets more chicks than you.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
Only if Blonde_Princess_Elena69 logs on.

What do you think of roleplayers?
Imagination is more important than knowledge.

HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
No, joining a guild involves a lot of commitment. I play only to have fun, and when it becomes a necessity to play a game because other people depend on me, it's not appealing to me.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
In any MMO I played, I usually didn't cohort with more than 2 or 3 people, probably because the work vs payoff isn't so great.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
The worst types of players are the ones that treat others badly because their skill level is higher.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Probably cursing at them or refusing to play with them depending on what kind of game.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
Usually new players ask a lot of questions, or do things that they are unaware of what the consequences are.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
Moderators, cheaters

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
In runescape there is a rule against swearing; I don't remember why but about a decade ago I must have sworn because logging onto my old account about a year ago I had been permanently muted.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
spamming, spawning, camping, level up

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I like the bruiser types: big, slow, and powerful

Do you characters have different personalities?
Usually just me, though my GuildWars guy Chuck Falcon was preacher of womens' subservience

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
I use a lot of bigger words in real life just because typing them takes too long.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
Everyone I know from the real world acts the same in the game.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
See above. That's about it.

What do you think of roleplayers?
Kind of weird. I'm not into the whole thespian thing either though, so I think it's more of my own issues.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I tested a low-end MMO(for CASH) and was required to. My clan was called IBS SURRPISE and I was the scourge of clean undergarment proponents everywhere. I was called the grandmaster of splash damage by some of my cohorts.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
Usually I would go into the game areas and hide in the corner and say generally rude and inconsiderate things to anyone willing to listen. Not necessarily about the other players, but in general. Discussions of the sexual tendencies(and frequency) of the Ukrainian Prime Minister was a common theme for the debates I would have with myself. The logic here is that it would distract them into allowing me an unfair advantage. The key problem here is that most people who play multiplayer games do not have the prerequisite english language comprehension abilities necessary to explore the full scope of the things I was saying. Usually I would find them hovering over my dead body saying LOL WUT? and that's about as much of an advantage I could ever gain.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
The ones that were better than me, which was usually a great number of them. I do not appreciate being bested in any way by people who throw their lives away to play multiplayer online games.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Much the same as players that I liked; With passionate, unabiding disrespect and insincerity. The only people that you can trust less than those who fail to gain your respect are those who do.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
If they were playing this game, I would say that, by default, they were either a "noob" or someone wishing to inflict punishment upon themselves. Unfortunately I am unable to gather much excitement on the topic of discerning between the two.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
Lithuanians mostly(ghastly people), but it's possible to mask your ethnic origins online, thereby making my guidelines somewhat difficult to follow.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
Don't make fun of the developers, because they apparently reserved the right to use ethnic slurs freely, and whine about it for quite some time if any of it was directed at them. Because of my outstanding familiarity with the English language, however, I was able to circumvent this in profoundly inventive ways where the developer was unaware that I was having a hard chuckle at their expense. This is quite easy to do when you are playing a game developed by people who are several thousand years behind your own evolutionary cycle.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
No. My mother is as aware of my distaste for those of the midget persuasion as the players of multiplayer online games I have played with are.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I would usually play as blacks because white people are always afraid of being cannibalized by dark-souled people from the jungle, and I felt that this was a good way to tap into that fear.

Do you characters have different personalities?
Certainly! I always made sure to keep a dumpy, naked white male character handy for whenever I felt like a black cannibalistic character wasn't setting the right mood.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
Do you think that I would not notice you asking the same question twice? I will invent a replacement question and answer it below:

No, I do not wish to ever do that. It is gross and distasteful and I would hate to see you ever ask anybody that question again.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
I was testing the game and knew quite a few of the testers in real life, so I unfortunately had the displeasure of knowing them digitally and physically. I would equate this to being "double the pain" or something to that effect. The only plus is that you can say things about the questionable nature of their upbringing both online and in person, but that's really where the advantages end.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
To a point. I would pretend to be Nigerian businessmen with can't miss proposals, and frustrated KGB operatives threatening to shut down the server due to non-compliance with State Security protocol. Unfortunately I could never find anybody willing to roleplay as stupid suburban american housewives willing to throw their social security number at me, or frightened Belarusians fearfully guarding their wooden shacks from the mighty Committee for State Security. Oh well. C'est la vie!

What do you think of roleplayers?
I think the death penalty would be sufficient, but I don't necessary believe anything that formal would be absolutely essential. Line them up in the streets, give them a long beating, and put the survivors to work in the factories for slave wages.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I've joined guilds in every MMO I've played because uh.. well, it's handy to have a bunch of people to call on when you need something.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
I don't know what this is.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Not really. Even the ones who take the game too seriously are hilarious to have around.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Same as the ones I like, with strict mocking.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
Uh, what? This question is still badly worded. What do I class as a noob? Someone who is new to a game, and lacks the experience to play well. Or someone who has played for a long time and is still unbelievably terrible. Or someone who has played a lot and is really good, and takes it out on others. Or anyone at all.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
No, except on PVP servers where you avoid/are terrified of everyone.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
None of these. Most MMOs have a swear filter which I have turned off.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
Uh, most of them? I guess if you count using the real words in place of acronyms (ie: What the Fuck instead of WTF) then not as many. But yeah, like others have said, I'd never say any game-specific phrases irl. Like GG.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
In the olden days I always played priest/cleric, as I like having the power of healing over somebody. But I usually end up defaulting to a tank class, which is what I am best at.

Do you characters have different personalities?
No, they all just have my personality.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
What the hell? I just answered this.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
I've known a few people IRL who've played WoW, and apart from firing less firebolts out of their fingertips irl they are pretty much the same. I met my current gf on TF2 and apart from acting much more shy and quiet irl she is the same.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
I used to more when I was younger. It's fun being immersed in a game. Unfortunately as you grow older and more cynical, you notice how ridiculous the concept is. However, I still enjoy playing on RP servers, as they are usually full of people who take the game too seriously (read: are fun to mess with).

What do you think of roleplayers?
Misguided, I guess. But hey, they are having fun playing the game they want to, so meh.
