Sure, he committed rape [well, ][/well,] and fled the country before sentencing [even ][/even], but he was forced to avoid countries with extradition policies that would jeopardize his freedom for thirty years so it's all cool, right?!?
...
What... using various laws to escape a conviction is fine but using the same tactics to catch and extradite him is wrong? Lets have the lawyers figure this one out. Everyone else should fuck off.
"(He has) atoned for the sins of his young years," Jacek Bromski, head of the Polish Filmmakers Association, told The AP. "He has paid for it by not being able to enter the U.S. and in his professional life he has paid for it by not being able to make films in Hollywood."
Like this guy.
In Paris, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said he hoped Polanski could be quickly freed by the Swiss, calling the apprehension a "bit sinister." He and his Polish counterpart Radek Sikorski wrote to Clinton and called Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey about the case.
And these guys. Especially these guys since it was the policy set by people in their position that lead France to deny the US's extradition requests to begin with. It's out of their hands now and they should definitely fuck off.
With that said this is pretty disgusting. Money and acclaim shouldn't give you access to bullshit plea bargains or excuse you of the crimes you've committed and neither should cash settlements with rape victims, which, according to testimony and his guilty plea, is what exactly what happened. Oh, and lets not forget that she was 13 at the time when he lured her in, drugged her up, and raped her on top of fleeing the country before the real sentencing hearing of said acts would commence.
