pretty interesting. a new fossil was found to have existed a million years before lucy and that there is no "missing link" -- something inbetween humans and chimpanzees. apparently the last known ancestor now looks neither like chimp nor human nor anything inbetween?

isn't it pretty common knowledge that we didn't evolve from chimps but instead came from a common ancestor and went down diverging paths from there?

You can't describe anything about evolution as "common knowledge"

It may seem obvious to you, and others, but there is still a vast ammount of people that entirely disagree with the theory (ffff religion)

And either way, it's a pretty complex subject

Hey this is pretty cool though. We can infer a lot from a fossil like this. Of course the whole 'sex-for-food' hypothesis is pretty much grasping at straws.

There was that bone-embedded-in-tendon thing that allows them to climb trees, as well as the necessary bones for bipedalism.

Only problem is the archeologist doesn't now jack squat where these things *really* go, which was the case of most dinosaur fossils before further research would prove earlier configurations impractical. So we don't know whether or not Ardi had a goddamn flagella sticking out of her head -- the configuration we have today is just the best thing we can think of given the evidence we have.

yeah but lucy was thought to be our last common ancestor, something that has similar features to both man and ape. now that this thing predates it by a million years and it's closer to humans than apes, if we did come from something similar it would have to predate this thing.

it's amazing how much they can do with two shards of a femur and a tooth though
