Update:[/u]

For the matter of convenience, I've uploaded a fully pre-patched file to RapidShare. This version is a simple .rar file which you can unzip and play. Unfortunately it still contains my beta tester's save file. Check out the first post for the link.

In other news, I discovered the source of the annoying sound error. The game requires a file called "jbsmc033" not "jbmsc033." SM - Not MS.

I am so terribly sorry about this. I've taken the time to play through the game myself now, and it works perfectly. Blame Vista for the main source of the troubles. It was preventing my VX from saving changes I made to the game, thus the huge amount of patches.

@Confused: You needed to just copy "23MonOhVirgilRise" not rename it outright. That's why the intro was screwing up. As for the other file, read above. It'll work for you now. Please believe me, I'm very sorry this release was such a disaster.

Well, I tried to follow Dark Gaia's instructions for how to patch & fix the previous version.
I guess I didn't do it right, sorry everyone.

To make up for it, here's another mirror for the newest update:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7L4DJYB8

I included the Manual & Fonts, since they weren't inside the Rapidshare download.

And here's a download for the Manuals & Fonts only for everyone who already downloaded the latest game from the new Rapidshare link:

Thanks very much SegNin for that upload, I appreciate it heaps. I'm adding the links to the main post now. Oh and for those people who are playing SegNin's previous upload, you can negate the error by renaming "jbmsc033.mid" to "jbsmc033.mid".

Minor Bug Update:

The second floor of the Burkewych Inn is not accessible unless you go into Legionwood/Audio/BGM and copy and rename "jbmsc024" to "Crysta".

Umm... May I ask if you can elaborate a bit? Why should the maker I used matter? It's the game itself that counts.

I have a suggestion; use original portraits. RMVX games keep using the same stock portraits over and over. It's like how RMXP games keep using the same stock music repeatedly. By using original portraits, your game would become all that more it's own.

Issues I'm seeing:
Lots of trailing cursors that don't erase (Battle, Blacksmith, etc)
If an enemy evades an attack and then uses certain skills, it'll show them "Evade" again (ex: Bat's Drain skill)
Critical modifier is too much (hitting 600+ at level 3 is a bit excessive I believe)

It's pretty fun and pretty pretty, I'm enjoying it, but there are some graphical issues, and in my opinion, your formulas seem a bit too steep.

Edit: 'kay, you really need to reset the hit/evasion back to default every time a character takes action.  I just dodged Healing Light (and consequently died).  That shouldn't happen.
Also; heal doesn't work in the menu (magic heal, items work fine).

Edit++: Got to the ship, and now I get a Stack Depth error.

Chakra Spindle Progress ~
CMS - 99% (What if something happens!)
CBS - ~5% - Mostly just (really poor) sprite work!

Desperately in need of a spriter~

Aargh, those Stack errors! I don't have any clue what causes them but for some reason they only occur once. The second time you reach that part it won't happen funnily enough. I'll take on board your other comments, I'm rescripting the combat ratios and such right now for the next version. Glad you enjoyed it.

UPDATE NEWS

A new release is currently on the way, expected to arrive in mid January. While it isn't a new chapter release, it is still a release worth getting, due to the fact that it addresses most of the criticisms people have about Legionwood.

In short: This is a version of the game designed to get rid of the things people hate about Legionwood and make it a more appealing game to the people who currently despise it.

Features

I've decided to pretty much overhaul Legionwood as I've decided I want to make it into a game that everyone can play that is fun to play. I'm addressing the most pressing criticisms about the game and turning the game into a more casual game overall. I don't want to make a revolutionary game; just one that is fun and does what it does well. Thus, whether you're a fan of Legionwood already, someone who's never played, or someone who despises the game with a passion, I urge you to try this new release, as it is a new Legionwood and one which I've engineered to appeal more to you.

1. Every line of dialogue in the game and every cutscene will be streamlined and rewritten, and will flow smoother and more naturally.

2. The issues with balancing in the early areas of the game (which thankfully do even out later on) will be resolved. The early game difficulty will more closely match the later areas of the game. You will be able to clear the first dungeon at level one.

3. Several skills and items will be rebalanced as some are too weak/too powerful.

4. Focus will be taken off characterisation and placed upon the story instead. I agree: Legionwood is always awkward in the scenes where I make the characters try to characterise so the story will now become more world driven.

5. A complete playtest will be done and every reported bug and sound error will be fixed.

6. Chapter three will be extended slightly. You'll be able to proceed to Castoth's fortress this time around.

Release Notes

Despite all these massive changes, those currently playing the game will be able to use their save files to continue if they want to.

@Craze: I don't use shitty scripts, I use ones made by well known scripters like Woratana for example. Maybe I simply use too many?

Update/News - Jan 2010

Hey there everyone!

As I type this, the fourth release of Legionwood is busy being uploaded onto RMN's servers where with luck it will be available to download soon. With that said, if it isn't there when you try to download it, it most likely hasn't been approved yet, so try back in a few hours and it probably will be.

As Legionwood is my main project, I've invested quite a lot of time into it so far (bordering two years now) so it wasn't a very difficult decision in the long run to try and pinpoint people's major concerns with the previous versions of Legionwood and spend time addressing these things and reworking the game to a more likable state rather than simply pressing on with yet another chapter with those problems unfixed, so the main draw of this release is simply being able to see a refined, redone version of Legionwood rather than seeing new content.

In summary: This is the new Legionwood. The game you know is still in there, except now it's different. The bad parts nobody liked are gone, and the good parts have been made much, much better. This is Legionwood in its best form yet. Hopefully if you didn't like the game before, this version will prove to be much more appealing to you. I've worked very hard. Special thanks go to the folks of RMN and HB Games for helping me with this.

For those who were expecting new content however, don't despair! This version of Legionwood brings with it a bigger, expanded chapter three with about a full hour's worth of new story material and quests, plus these little additions as well:

- Rewritten dialogue from the start of chapter one to the end of chapter three. Cut scenes now flow more naturally, are not as boring as they once were and are somewhat shorter too.
- New battle system! The battle system has been upgraded to a later, smoother running version of the Tankentai script, so you can expect new battle abilities based on Tankentai's unique animation capabilities. As well as this, you can expect semi-new battle backgrounds and every single enemy being rebalanced and tweaked to make for an easier but still challenging game.
- Tweaked and rebalanced character stats and growth. Level ups have been made a lot weaker in terms of stat boosts so emphasis is now on the AP system to develop your character (as was originally intended) plus all characters now have roughly the same stat growth, meaning now you truly can create your own class as all restrictions that existed before, such as characters obviously being geared towards spellcasting etc, have been removed.
- New, shorter game intro which is somehow as (if not more) informative storywise as the last one despite only being a tenth as long.

Stack errors are caused by shitty scripts that misuse aliases.

Heh, I just learned about this...
Basically what happens is the program is trying to grab the file from a "stack"... you've "stacked" another Alias (or reference) over the first alias the program is calling (it can't take something from the middle of the pile) so it causes a crash... atleast I think that is what's going on.

Granted I've been really tired the last few days and falling asleep in this class (waking up at 6:30 every morning does not fit with my sleep patterns... stupid body)

I would test this, but my internet isn't really reliable enough to download something large (I use satalite internet which likes to D/C at random times, while also randomly increasing pings or kicking me out of online games at crucial times... how does it always know when I'm needed? x.x)

Yeah two bits of good news: I fixed the stack errors and rather than letting others beta test this for me I played it from start to end MYSELF so you can be sure it works first time this time. Anyone who was around for One Night 3's release knows I cleaned up my act.

Keep in mind though one thing I didn't change is the difficulty. If you found Legionwood hard before, it's roughly the same now. I love hard RPGs, so I tend to make my own ones that way. With that said, you can survive the battles if you think as I and my friends have done.

Here's some advice from a beta tester:

Quote
Okay, very simple to survive in Legionwood but you gotta be prepared. Buy Lann the heaviest, strongest weapons and armor you can get but buy Liara the mage's cloak, whip and hat. Now, go and buy Liara the 3 elemental spells and Healing Light, while you get Lann double strike and study enemies.
Finally, enter the menu, select Character, and in the status screen hit A. Spend Lann's AP on Attack and Defense, spend Liara's on Intellect and Defense.
Now spend whatever cash you have left on peptides.

Proceed to Selatan Plains. Have Lann attack in battle and Liara cast spells. Use Salves if wounded and peptides if low on SP. Hang around near the save point until you reach level 2 and you can relax

The golden rule with Legionwood is to not spam attack. In the game's early areas, heal if you fall below 60% of your max HP, and do make sure you cast spells. Also, make sure you spend AP at every level up as without it you cannot raise your stats high enough to survive.

You may want to find some new beta testers (if you have any), because I've found two "bugs" in the Selatan Plains alone.

• After the battle at the beach to get the cat, the battle background for the area doesn't reset to the original background until you either enter the cave or return to the world map.
• After activating the save point, whether you save/heal or not, pressing the Space Bar afterward adds two party members that you have yet to encounter to your group. I haven't tried this in other areas, however.

Something else I would suggest adding to your game would be events that block moving events from entering a doorway on the inside of houses. From the first village, I walked into the blacksmith and the old man there walked into the doorway, therefore blocking my exit and forcing me to sit there until he moved back out. Although not game-breaking, it is still annoying having to wait for events to move out of my way for me to continue.

Thank you for the reports. I do have beta testers but my head tester is rarely around and he does do a great job. I'll recruit some more.

The first bug you reported I will fix, though the battleback should be... nevermind, I just realised I left in a relic from a deleted event.

The second bug makes me frown in puzzlement. Never ever has anyone reported this, nor is there any eventing in place that would cause such a thing to happen...

EDIT: Found it. It was a debug event I'd had in place ever since the game's first release two years ago. It's a random floor tile. You just happened to find it. I'm removing it right away. That particular bug won't happen in any other place.

Also, in the first town in the upper side of it. In front of "Your House", there's a sign that says that the marketplace is to the west, though from the way that the sign is facing, and your house's location for that matter, it would be to the east.

Ah that is true. That's an error on my part. I've released a small patch to fix all these things. I'm glad that the game only needs one patch this time around.

Update:

I've uploaded a small 2MB patch which will fix the following things in Legionwood 3.12:

- You can no longer get stuck landing your ship at Charn Port.
- You can now complete Demonhold Keep.
- Learning Dual Wielding no longer gives you wierd, rare weapons you shouldn't have.
- Kills the bug that adds Thyrra to your party in Selatan Plains...

This patch is essential if you wish to complete the game. I have submitted it to RMN so expect it to be available within twelve hours. It is very easy to apply and fixes all of this version's problems.
