Torchlight is a pretty nifty Diablo-style action RPG made by Runic Games. A lot of the studio is made up of ex-Blizzard employees. This game is only $20 on Steam and through some other direct-download services. The boxed version will be available early next year.

Screenshots:

Some game info in handy bullet-point format:

  • Is a Diablo-style action RPG.
  • Includes three playable classes, which boil down essentially to melee fighter, ranged fighter, and magician.
  • Uses a Diablo/WoW style loot system, with common, rare, unique, and set items, and socketable gems.
  • Has a Pet companion system. Your pet can carry additional loot, and you can send your pet back to town to sell your extra items without interrupting your game.
  • Has four difficulty levels, plus "hardcode" mode, where your character can only die once.
  • Has an endless dungeon available after you complete the main quest.
  • Has an "heirloom" system, which allows you to retire a character and transfer one of its items to a new character.
  • Lets you transfer items between your characters.
  • Includes a full-featured editor that can be used to create new fixed and random maps, add new items, monsters, etc. (Runic used it to make the game content.)

It's really good, guys. It's basically like they took Diablo and condensed it down into a shorter game that gives you more fun earlier on.

The only real downside is that it's single-player only. It would have been great fun to romp around the dungeon with some friends, but Runic is currently developing an MMORPG in this game's style, so in fact pretty soon we'll be able to do just that. :)

Come on, people. It's twenty bucks for a very polished game. Check it out.

I just beat the story on hard actually and found it to be a really fun experience. I recommend everyone to start on at least hard though because normal is apparently way too easy.
Since they are including the editor used to build the game, I can't wait to see what kind of mods people come up with :) .
I should mention that someone is working on the very basic core function of multiplayer though and hopefully it'll evolve into a fully playable multiplayer mod!

ps everyone should buy this game imo

I have been playing this and I bought it for a girl who had never played Diablo before. She and I both enjoy it a lot. I'm not very far, because I like to play on Hard-Hardcore so I've been experimenting with different builds. I can't wait to get my hands on the editor. Let's trade dungeons. :):)

For $20 this is a must.

Reminds me of FATE (the one bundled in HP laptops)

In the Works:

the guy who made FATE and the guys who led Diablo 1/2 worked together to make this game. the music composer of diablo 1/2 also worked on this game which explains why they're kinda similar.
this game is way better than fate though..fate sucked and is boring with no purpose

Yeah, FATE is shoddily-created Diablo wannabe, with a shoddy emphasis on your transformable companion. And by the way, in the FATE demo, whether you have a male or female character, they only use 1 type of character speech sounds. I tried letting my female character die, but she died crying a male's voice.

How big is this game anyways?

will it ever be multiplayer, at least over LAN/IP?  I play diablo 2 with my wife and she'd probably enjoy this.

They are releasing Torchlight Online as some sort of MMO ala Mythos in about a year.

Looks great and I don't think that having no co-op is a problem really, I mean it's twenty bucks which is a sweet deal. Now if I could run it on my computer, I would definitely get it!

Have you tried the demo? It doesn't have very high system requirements.

man i actually really like single player RPGs.  there is just so much less player to player bullshit that you don't have to deal with in it, and its just kind of your own turf.

regardless to say, i've downloaded this and have been playing it for a bit, and while i don't have much time now, it's pretty fun and i plan on finishing it sometime in the near future.  the graphics style does take some getting used to, but its not as bad as I thought it would be to play/look at most of the time though.

it actually has very low system requirements. it will definately work for p. much everyone nowadays
.

i found the similarity to diablo humorous at first (they really did just make it again) but the warcraft 3 graphics style kinda bugged me at first.

but anyways i haven't played it alot and i only have the demo (i haven't found limitations yet what are they?) so i guess its doing pretty well so far
