I'm sure a lot of the love around Macs is justified, however I have always been put off by the price. I bought a new tower a few weeks ago and the closest Mac pro is almost four times the price! To be fair I was comparing my PC to one on the Apple store (I presume non-Apple sellers are cheaper) and the build quality is no where near as good. But still, four times!!!!

My recommendation would be to buy an equivalent or higher end Windows laptop with a spare battery. You also said your not looking for a netbook, but you might be able to get both a standard laptop and a netbook for the same price as mac book pro. This would allow you to have something portable for presentations and something powerful for working.

i have no idea why anyone would buy both a windows laptop and a netbook to do the exact same things as the macbook pro at the exact same price, if you are put off by the price alone then why would you do this?  you're paying the same thing for the same functionality just broken into two separate pieces

I think if I got the mac I would have to buy the 3 year support thing too because I hear that whilst the build quality is exceptional, the failure rate is pretty high.

I've had mine since the summer of 07 and never had anything fail on me.

Yes, but they are a bit too pricey to risk it.

Yeah this. Kind of weird logic, StudioFortress.

I've had mine since the summer of 07 and never had anything fail on me.
I know you're just speaking of personal experience... but for the record this is a logical fallacy known as selective observation and doesn't really help prove anything. Regardless, you're mostly right - a new laptop reliability study found Apple laptops to be the 4th most reliable with a pretty high reliability rate.

You know what's also a cult? People who keep talking about how unreasonably biased Mac users are and how you absolutely should never listen to them. Come on man. This is about as old and incorrect as that same Mac cult you yourself describe.
Fuck you I never said this reread my post and try again. I wasn't talking about the average mac user. Hell I myself am an "average mac user" I use them every day all day. I was talking about the cult that goes on message boards preaching about the gospel of the mac. Windows has it's fanboys too I won't deny that (so does Linux) but Mac fanboys are - in my opinion - the most ardent and annoying.

homie, any laptop you buy has a chance of shitting out on you.

My wife rocks the macbook and it's a pretty decent machine. Also for what it's worth I have an old G3 ibook and a G4 aluminum powerbook that I got way back in the day that still work fine running your basic web browser/office routine pretty well and those are pushing a decade.

this is the most annoying thing dude, i know about logical fallacies already and i wasn't trying to prove anything concrete i really was just speaking from experience and idk why you would bring any of that up, it is a really annoying thing to do

Some people don't mind it but I personally find laptops a hassle to carry around. I own an eee pc and love how small and portable it is. My normal bag containing both my books and my eee takes up less space then the laptop bags of my friends. I know others who rent a locker to store their laptop on campus becuase they don't like carrying it everywhere, again I don't find this an issue. I even have a coat with pockets big enough to fully fit my eee into (although it's far from pocket sized). Finally I find it difficult and uncomfortable to hold laptops with one hand; namely using it whilst walking or standing. Again it's not really an issue with the eee. There are also smaller and thinner netbooks then my eee.

But it's too small and not powerful enough to use as a real main or replacement PC. That's why I was suggesting both a laptop and a netbook. One for when you want ultra portability and one for something more powerful. It's just another alternative I'm putting out there.

Well don't use anecdotal evidence to respond to "whilst the build quality is exceptional, the failure rate is pretty high." The only adequate response to something like that is empirical evidence.

Well if you walk around with a mac book and someone steals it the loss will be greater than if someone steals your netbook
Play Raimond Ex (if you haven't already)

I wasn't using that statement to ARGUE A POINT THOUGH and you yourself acknowledged this.  I was just sharing a piece of information.  It's a pretty annoying move to come in and go WELL EXCUSE ME LET ME LIST LOGICAL FALLACIES AS IF YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF THEM.  It was just an offhanded comment, you didn't have to make such a big deal about it.

good choice with the 3 year warranty ed, i wish i got it for mine ~_~

also one thing that bothered me when i started using OS X is that i thought there were no hotkeys and it was all clicking. toooooo much clicking. after using it a little, i learned the hotkeys and they're really a great help. you probably know the "alt tab" with apple + tab, but the best and most useful one is -- cycle through windows of the same program with apple + `.  maybe you already knew this, but if anyone doesn't try it!

i also have a side question? does mac still sell those little weird remotes with their computers? they could control itunes, or frontrow whatever that interface is called. good design flaw is that it works on EVERYONE'S COMPUTERS. i used to bring my remote to class, point it at peoples' computers and press play  :fogetlaugh: god, its hilarious.

Dude, you can sync the remote to your specific computer.  I learned this my first year of uni because I was tired of accidentally setting off my roommate's itunes (and hearing her awful music).  I'm assuming they still come with the remotes but yeah sync yours with your laptop right away.
