For the last nine months I've been working for a web hosting company based out of Columbus, Ohio.  They are originally from Hopkinsville, KY and maintain a relatively small office here that employs around 40 people who do everything from basic tech support to advanced coding and database management for our customers.  Just a couple of weeks ago they announced that they are closing the KY location down due to 'economic concerns' and have offered the majority of the reps here a small severance.

The good news in all of this is that right now (aside from management) I'm the only person who has received a job offer at the Columbus location.  This means I'm getting a sweet pay raise, compensation for the move and automatic seniority over the new people they've hired over the last couple of months to replace the majority of the guys and gals here who can't make the move or won't be offered a position.

I've had ran into some pretty great deals doing freelance web design in the past, but this is the first real promotion I've ever had with a job that I actually enjoy.  It's pretty sobering thinking about all of the people here who are sorta gonna be left to fend for themselves, but at the same time I'm incredibly excited and really can't wait to finally get the hell out of the southeast and establish myself at least somewhat closer to the Canadian border.

So yeah, discuss great job opportunities that have fallen into your lap and/or the shit jobs you have had in the past or are currently working.  Prior to this I've changed oil/tires at a Wal-Mart, delivered pizza for just about every place in town, jockeyed a desk in the computer science department at the university I used to go to, managed campus computer labs, and directed traffic at construction sites (by far the worst...9 hours standing around on hot pavement as the sun mercilessly pulverizes your face and turns your skin into a blistered and charred shadow of its former self).

i think if i averaged it out i've made like $200 gross a year. i know in work situations you're likely to have assignments or whatever to stress you out too but i imagine everything would be nicer with enough money to pay to be healthy.

i try to be as inactive as possible because it means i eat less. i've spent maybe $100 on clothes in the last 5 years

uhhhh HOW DO PEOPLE WHO HAVE GONE FROM COLLEGE TO WORK FELT ABOUT THE TRANSITION?

Its exactly the same, you get the popular employees and the unpopular ones. Your manager's are like highschool gym teacher's, dumb as fuck and think they know best and no matter how hard you try the popular guys will always get the raise instead of you.

The only difference is you cant get your parents to call in sick for you.

Haha sounds like your life is torture sorry dude.

Anyway I'm going to study as long as I can and then as soon as I finish I'm going to travel again I think. I've worked part time whilst I study and I fucking hate it, I just cannot get my head around doing something five days a week just so I can be happy on the weekend. It's my life and we live in this scumbag system where I have to work at a job and waste my whole life so I can retire when I'm too fucking old to do anything. I'm going to try as hard as I can to get around working full time in a shitty job.

I've dropped out of my course at uni because I want to reapply to do something totally different. They don't let you change your classes very easily here in the UK, it's pretty rigid and the only option for me this time was to get out and start again, somewhere else. I need to wait until September to do that though, although I have to apply now. So I have about 9 months ahead of me where I either need to be working a lot or go back home to my parents and work less. I am looking into traveling during this time but I don't really have very much money so I don't think I can afford to go the places I want to go.

First year of university was an unbelievably easy deal for me and I am really looking forward to going back to a better course. Screw jobs.

I only do a bit of freelance in my spare time now.  I did it full time for a while but it was only for the lack of a better option.

The really good thing about this company is that it's not really like that at all, which is kinda rare from what I understand.  On the whole we're all just a bunch of passive geeks, and the environment is such that you really can earn a decent opportunity for yourself if you, you know, give a fuck.

Uni is great, when I finish my course I'm going for a masters and then after that maybe a research degree.
Real work is for chumps, why would anybody want to do that when you can dedicate your entire life to studying the glueing techniques used in Kurt Schwitter's Merz works???

I am in 3rd year EE&E and I want to do a PHD after I get my MEng. The world of work doesn't appeal to me much at all and I love the uni livestyle. I am hoping to actually get a first this year I just have to be shit hot. All my grades this year are 80+ so far so I am hoping I can do it. In years 1 and 2 I got shit grades cause I felt crap all the time and couldn't be bothered to make the effort. I don't have a girl making me miserable this time around though and I find it much easier to concentrate. Gonna leave that one till I come out the other end.

Its not all its cracked up to be.

I started to take a class or two online at a local community college just for the sake of keeping in my groove until I finally get around to deciding what I want to really do with my life and enter grad school. Right now I'm on an overnight shift at a lab and have a part time job on weekends. Work is really a soulless routine I have to go through so I can have health insurance, pay bills/buy food, and have money for stupid shit I don't need like gadgets and ridiculously priced headphones and alcohol.

it ain't exciting at all. If you can somehow afford to stay in school forever(or you live in a country that isn't fucking nuts and provides you with the resources to stay alive without gouging you financially) then do it, learn everything you possibly can before you're old
