I'm rambling and haven't thought about this enough to be coherent but I do think the shift in focus from kind of objects which are in opposition to the player like earlier games to uh environments/experiences in which the challenges are just a part of that world had a big thing to do with this stuff. I really want to make some weird horrible game and burn it to a disk for someone to find and play and go WOW WHAT and having that sense of an inexplicable object to it again, but I can't because who picks up disks they just find lying around??

I want to do this with a (music) CD

and people do pick up things that are just lying around when the line between reality and game has been blurred

I dunno you could leave it in a place and say it's some pc disk about using ebay or mortgage or something

The fact is, if you have a 360, you have the best of both worlds. You have the modern hits plus you have the live arcade and indie games to download. So if you are a fan of the ways games are today you can buy overpriced titles like Halo or Gears. And if you are a fan of fun games you can download the arcade and indie games. Problem solved.

rone i know this is off topic or whatever but i don't know any other way to get your attention. do you want to work on a music collaboration sometime? i like your music a lot and want to either work on some more 9/11 conspiracy beats with you or maybe remake garlic breath. i'm being completely serious.

I was watching that Bad Mojo game in the other topic and I think I mentioned it already but it's like games now are worried about being too gross, or having like, OLD people etc., it's not just about challenge imo it's about fucking with the player.
Although it's not even so much that I expect them to make me angry or sad or happy or whatever but even bewildered would be something.

I might have come off as emphasizing challenge as difficulty, game mechanics or enemies too much, although it's a good and straight-forward example of what I'm trying to say, I mean challenge in a broader sense. Basically it can be anything, that doesn't immediately reveal everything it has. That would like if a book's name back cover would sum it up so well you wouldn't actually have to read the book. There's no other level than the surface, when you scratch it beneath is just cardboard on which it's all glued.

We had a long talk about this with Ramci and a friend of ours, and I'm very confident things are going to get better and even out in the future. I think the whole game industry, even the whole gaming culture, is still going through the phase of realising for the first time that games can be popular, they can sell masses and they can be widely accepted as a part of pop culture and everyday lives. Once that's no longer news and the fever passes, things are going to normalize and settle to a pretty stable balance just like all the other art forms have, where there's the entertainment side (which mostly dominates sales figures) and then there's the art side and a lot of shades in between, living side by side. Right now there seems to be a ridiculously big gap between indie art games and big commercial releases, and the latter not only dominates sales, but media attention (even in field specific releases, not just mass media) and the number of releases.

By the way, can anyone tell me, if any other art forms have went through similar phases? Music, literature and graphic arts all have such a history that it really doesn't work like that, but what about films? They were born out of technology the same way games were, though they obviously have a lot stronger roots in drama than games could be said to have in board games or sports or whatever.

Fig 1: What?! PIKACHU is evolving!

I definitely feel nostalgia for when game developers were unafraid to fuck up. I don't know if games are better now or not, and frankly I don't care much either. I feel compelled to react against all the safe shit developers put out regardless.
who really cares all of them are so DAMN CUTE

haha, I do think the first one has the most character though. As they go on and on they're trying to look more and more like the anime

really if you look exclusively at Jap games it's more evident how badly a lot of game designers wanted to make everything look like an anime but they couldn't on account of video memory/things like that and we probably got a lot of interesting graphic styles that way. even freaking LINK looks like an anime if you look at the concept art as far back as NES/SNES days, he just looks more like an oldschool one like Cyborg 009

Edit: You could argue that he looks like an anime now but that's exactly my point, a lot of these people probably weren't very creative with the art style and would've rather made it anime but were forced to do a style that would show up on the little screen/doesn't require huge sprites. On the other hand stuff like the PC98 every fucking game looks like an anime because they had a lot of video memory and a limited color palette or something

Edit: may come across some porn looking it up but I found it looking up games like Snatcher ok

sorry yeah it was Legend

and they mention the Comedy Central thing on wikipedia

neither game has anything to do with final fantasy anyway does it
I believe that the Final Fantasy: Legend series and Final Fantasy Adventure belong to the Romancing Saga and Seiken Densetsu series respectively, most likely for marketing purposes.

I believe that a shift in the demographic appeal of video games more recently as led to developing for more of the mainstream as opposed to keeping the gamer mentality in mind. More developers are focused on a rememberable cinematic experience and pushing polygons as opposed focusing on neat gameplay implementations that essentially make them fun and worthwhile. It seems that they're forced to do this even if it means sacrificing how they believe a game should be properly made, since a greater appeal TODAY bears a different meaning than it did 10-15 years ago during an age that catered to a smaller range of people. But sometimes I wonder how valid this theory actually is. It seems like the industry has always been in an an inner struggle to be better than the competition aesthetically and even then there is about as much unplayable shit today as there was back then, just now it LOOKS much more pleasing and sometimes plays a little better. And how can focusing on one element make you deviate from the entire process of making something that's fun to play? Are developers really focused on and bent on producing something with mass appeal so much that other qualities are overlooked?

I don't know, to be honest, but I really dont think that developers are skimping out on qualities that would draw in more gamer parents or someone who's interest previously didn't include a SNES jRPG or DOS text-based game that primarily those who label themselves as gamers would legitmately enjoy. I know that this is extremely cliche but ill probably come up with something that's a little more worthwhile to read later.

Seriously though, a lot of the propositions and ideas in here are pretty clever so I should read them to get a little more insight on the appeal of past and current generation games.

That's the point exactly. The first pikachu works because they made him "accidentally cute". After that, they just keep re-making and re-making him so that he instead becomes more and more "cute on purpose". It's no longer a pikachu for pikachu's sake that just happens to be cute. It's a cute thing for cuteness sake that just so happens to be a pikachu.

It loses the whole spirit that made the first pikachu not only cute, but true to cuteness itself.

I'm really into pokémon porn but recently I've started looking at images of pokémon in their first stage of evolution and it makes me feel really disgusting. For example whereas I used to enjoy pikachu's subtle curves I can now only get off to pictures of pichu. Is this normal?

lol this is so fucking dumb

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

All of the Pokemon in Red and Blue look really ridiculous. Sure they look ALL WRONG now but they have so much character. They were supposed to be MONSTERS and I think when they stopped being MONSTERS and started being POKEMON they lost sight a little bit.
