So, my brother showed this piece to me a couple weeks back, and I was completely floored. "Music For 18 Musicians" is a 56 minute long "orchestral" song written by Steve Reich that premiered in 1976. It is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. It SOUNDS electronic, but every instrument used is an "orchestral" instrument, or a human voice. I really don't know how to introduce this song, or describe it, but everyone needs to hear it.

I uploaded it to Mediafire for you guys, here.

music for 18 musicians is from the 70s btw. just so everyone knows, this is not something new by some asshole thinking "smirk lets try to make something that sounds electronic/otherworldly but only with real instruments. it'll be like the beginning of animal collective's peacebone"

I don't know if that's the best drumming video but it's always nice when they set up the drums like that so you get the corresponding visual element of the sticks

here's another good one by two of the same guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egwXKQDYcvc

Yeah, Steve Reich is genius. If you guys like this take a look at his Piano Phase. It's basically a 12 note sequence played simultaneously on two pianos and, I don't know the exact mechanics but, every 8 bars (maybe 16?) or so, one of the pianos displaces itself back a note and it does it 12 times until it's back to where it started. I know an alternate way is for one piano to just play just the smallest bit slower (or faster) than the other, but I think that's actually much harder. Either way it's a really cool concept. Reich and all those minimalists basically started techno.

steven wilson strikes me as the kind of guy who would cite steve reich as an influence and then sounds nothing like him.

steven wilson strikes me as the kind of guy that can perform autofellatio and will talk to you about it for hours if it comes up and will continue to talk about it as you grow visibly uneasy and after you leave he will call you later and talk about suckin he own dick.
