well the similarities between Cuba and the DPRK are not really coincidental, both were relatively small countries whose revolutions involved kicking out a foreign presence and have faced hostility from the US since their inception. They're also alike in that they've been pretty much isolated from the world economy since the fall of the USSR which provided a lot of needed capital investment.

In the end though, the two little countries have held themselves together and I'd frankly much rather live in either of those two countries than most of the rest of the 3rd world.

dietcoke have you heard anything about the north korean central gov't redenominating their currency?

they're being told that their old notes are worthless and have to be exchanged for new ones (at a new rate), but they can only exchange up to a certain amount. apparently a lot of people had their savings become worthless overnight.

yeah, it was a move on trying to rein in on the unauthorized markets to prevent the middle class from becoming a threat to the state which wants to maintain its monopoly in both legal and black markets

Yeah it's real logical to have a cult of personality and make several thousands of people do a massive show just for you and a few visitors

I'd rather live in Cuba than in the DPRK, though, that's for damn sure. At least in Cuba you are allowed to... have contact with the outside world. I think the major difference between the two is that if the embargo was lifted on Cuba they would begin to make the transition to first world nation, whereas the DPRK would remain... as unchanged as possible to ensure state control and the crazy personality cult.

Also here is an interestingly beautiful picture of North Korea from wikipedia:

I imagine North Korea is a wonderfully beautiful place, naturally. It's a shame it is ruined by its government. =(

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

If they lifted the embargo on Cuba it would end up looking like haiti or jamaica over time.

its got a pretty decent standard of living compared to the rest of the third word. What would the freedom of speech and access to information mean to you if you were starving, had no potable water, and subject to regular violence from criminal warlords like in places like Congo?

Its a shitty place with some bizarre and oppressive shit going on but at least you've got a place to live

seeing how he has stayed in power for so long, despite I'M SURE plenty of cia attempts to depose him, PLUS the fact that he's realized that nuclear power (no matter how undeveloped) will give him a strong bargaining chip, i'd say he's pretty savvy

Its logical of youre goal is to maintain a society like the one in the dprk. If you consider the privilege of the leadership there, that enjoys a life of luxury on par with the wealthiest people in the world, you can easily see why it'd be in their interest to do so.

no it doesn't. it has catastrophic food shortages. their upper middle class standard of living is 1970s soviet style tenements at best.
