in cultural anthropology its sometimes assumed that there were a few different instances of independent inventions through out human history. meaning there were separate instances of people whom supposedly had no contact with each other due to large distances and created independently created fire.

didn't this happen with the sewing machine?  i think also early computers had this same problem where people in different countries were simultaneously inventing the same thing
