would the world be better off without sweatshops? a missionary living in cambodia was talking about how overjoyed this village was because adidas was going to set up a factory there, and by factory it meant 10 sewing machines in a lean-to. also i just bought some new balance shoes and i looked them up and they're notable because they've maintained a workforce in the states rather than outsourcing labour.
why isn't shoe/clothing production automated by now? if it were, would that benefit anyone? the price of labour in these poor countries is near negligible, but makes a hell of a difference to them. or would it be better to set up the factories closer to home? or would it be better to outsource the work, but pay the workers a similar wage?
