I started playing it earlier. I knew most of the stuff I saw already though cos I watched some videos on youtube. I just got to the hotel for the first time. I'm about to go play again!

edit:

That autopsy scene was dark! It wasn't also goofy or anything really, apart from when it was trying to be. I didn't realise how open the world was going to be in this, either. I'm really impressed so far. There's one issue I've got but I'll see how it develops as the game goes on.

I think shortly after the autopsy scene is where I got to, but at the moment I'm too busy with other things to give this game the time it deserves (I don't wanna start playing it unless I have a good chunk of time to devote to it)

I'm exploring the town a little right now. At the moment there is a very strong sense of this place having history and being alive. I don't know enough about it to see how much of a game it is yet, this is my favourite part of good games. There's a character in this game called Richard Dunn. The writing has been really good so far, like, really! People actually talk like people and the York's intuitions so far have actually seemed impressive rather than I SNEEZED AND SHE DIDN'T, SHE'S A SOCIOPATH!!!! or something like that. If I am going to post spoilers I'll try to be careful about it for anyone who isn't as far as I am or hasn't started yet.

I just got this yesterday and have played up the point right after the second combat segment. Those parts can actually get kind of scary. Moreso than any Resident Evil game has ever been. A lot of people have compared this game to Silent Hill, but I've never played a Silent Hill game so I can't comment on that.

Anyways, the combat isn't as bad as I was expecting. Every review I've read has said this is the one thing you're gonna hate about this game but, honestly, I'm finding it playable. It's pretty easy though, especially since your handgun has infinite bullets. It's probably better this way though.

Anyways, I realize the game is actually about the story, characters, and the town. I haven't got a chance to explore the town yet because I've felt obligated to keep the main plot going. York is a cool guy though, more interesting than most game protagonists are. I'm so sick of playing macho guys or, as Hundley said, avatar characters with blank personalities.

A good setting and interesting story goes a long way in making up for less-than-satisfactory gameplay mechanics for me, so so far it's pretty fun to play.

Also, I read that a lot of the developers who worked on the Tomba games work at the studio who made this. interesting.

Haha really, Tomba?  Talk about two very different games, how weird.  Somebody tell Dada...

I agree about the combat bits.  I didn't know there was anything scary in this game when I got it (I mean the cover should have told me something but then again tons of game covers--especially in US releases--are misleading like that).  Any of the combat scenes in this have turned me into a swearing moron.  If I don't kill an enemy from an incredibly far distance and they get anywhere near me I just start shouting FUCK FUCK FUUUUCK FUCK FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK SHIIIIIT SHIT FUUUUUUUCK.  I'm such a babby when it comes to scary things :(

the combat doesn't really bother me either. i'm playing on easy and i kill everything quickly. the difficulty with the gameplay for me is just how awkward everything is to do. like i think i might want to check out if some character has something interesting to say so i either drive to where i think they are or go on the radio, and then i get there and the place i thought they'd be is closed. so i go and sleep, and then when i get up it's raining and turns out that place is closed during the rain. so i sleep until it's sunny, it's all a big hassle!

i wish the map was static and had markers of what was open and what wasn't and where all the characters you've met are at a given time. then things would go a lot easier.

Yes, the changing perspective of the map is probably the most inconceivably stupid design decision I've seen so far.

Anyways, I'm on chapter 2 right now and the story's getting pretty interesting. The game is very much enjoyable when you're just out on the town investigating. And it's such a shame the combat segments are what they are. If this was just an adventure game I think it would be getting a lot more respect. It probably wouldn't be POPULAR but it probably wouldn't be so polarizing either. I can see why a lot of people wouldn't be able to stomach such shoddy graphics AND combat in one game in order to appreciate the plot and characters.

But hey, if they could have managed to make this game with gunplay mechanics at least somewhat comparable to RE4, this game would REALLY be something. I guess it was just budget/time constraints instead of the developers just sucking at making good gunplay?

Just finished ep 2 and have fallen in love with this game. Anything this game lacks in navigation/combat mechanics it makes up a million times over in storytelling.

this game seems pretty long. i have played like 8 hours already and i only just started chapter 2 recently. and there are 6 chapters, right? that's cool, because i pretty much already feel like this game has paid off. i've got some more time now so i'll play more and make more posts soon.

I am at the very beginning of episode 3 now. There is just a lot more to this thing than I was expecting there to be. I already know a bunch of the main characters really well, some plot developments that surprised me and definitely had a big impact have already happened, and I'm also surprised at how good the writing for each character is. I knew it was going to be funny and cool but I didn't know it was going be so natural and well acted, or even sad, and creepy, and just plain interesting as well? There is a lot of it as well. I wish it was an actual TV series.

The issue I mentioned before was women in the game. Not that they are really sexualized in the usual gross game way or anything, but a lot of the guys make comments about the way women are, and the way this game paints it the only kind of crime that exists is men murdering women. I don't think I am saying this game is gross because of this, I guess I just want to point out that it's there. I've got enough confidence in the writing so far that this 'problem' could actually be justified by the end of the game, but then again...maybe not. This is a problem with so much of the stuff I already love, though. Anyway, I'm not making any judgment on that right now I just wanted to point it out.

Anyway, yeah, a couple of people here are playing this just now so I think I will not talk about specific plot stuff for a while and even then I'll hide it. I knew only some basic stuff, as it turns out, before playing this game, and I thought I knew a lot. There's so much stuff in it!

I just finished it.

There are no words.

Also, this was very useful. I don't know how I'd get through the game without it! Thank you.

this will make sense to you by the end. don't lose faith, it's all deliberate.

The ending of the game kind of left me speechless. It was very well done. The part where had me shaking and I could feel my heart beat.

Also, there were so many "holy shit" moments like . so surreal.

i haven't read those spoilers (thanks for hiding them!).

I have played a lot today. I'm at the start of chapter 5. It's a sad game, and very tense especially now! There is something to this game that I will spend time trying to articulate later but, really, by the way this game is put across, I didn't expect things to go this way!

I guess I'll write this now just so people have it to look back on. (my feelings)
