Addressing an earlier post about gay being used as a derogatory term: You should hang around in schools over here hermano. The word 'gay' means 'lame', and kids use it every second sentence to describe something. If I give out a detention it is 'gay' and I'm 'such a gay teacher', the homework is 'gay', as is the fact that it rains or snows.

I'm not being like an APOLOGIST or whatever, but the word has changed its meaning on that front. Kids don't actually mean "THIS IS HOMOSEXUAL", they mean that it's lame. It's become part of their vernacular, however much we detest it. So like the best idea is to not become annoyed with it - in a few years it'll drop out of usage like that, much in the style of "RAD" and "ACE".

Man this is pretty much how I feel about this.  The kids aren't doing it to be HATEMONGERS and they don't even mean it in that sense at all.  Just like people who refer to GOING POSTAL aren't saying it because they hate postal workers.

All the more reason for it to be used to teach them that words can be very offensive even if they seem perfectly normal. I mean I totally agree that kids using it aren't immoral or vehemently anti-gay or anything like that, but on the other hand there's guys like Kami who are 24 and still say nigger because they think that if they don't mean to be racist, it's perfectly okay to use racist terms.

You can't compare using the word Nigger to using the word Gay.

I mean obviously gay is not necessarily an offensive or negative word at all, but the way it's being used it is. it's pretty absurd if you think about it, where it comes from and why it's used that way. it's a bad habit that isn't worth defending. using it doesn't make anyone a bad person or a homophobe, just someone who should probably readjust their language
