My XFX 8600GT idles at 71 C and goes all the way to 106 C on load and crashes.

I have the stock cooler on it, and a PCI slot exhaust fan next to it, plus a 80mm intake fan next to it. There is one other exhaust fan (120mm) on the back of the case. How can I get the temperature down?

Also, I might just replace the whole case and card, so any recommendations for a cheap computer case ($50 or less) and a budget video card ($120 or less) are appreciated.

may want to replace the thermal paste and make sure the heat sinks are seated tightly, if they're not the fan set up could be acting more as a METAL HEAT PRISON

Don't XFX have a lifetime guarantee?

^ had to register your card within 30 days of buying it. Pff.

Well I changed the thermal paste. It lowered  the temperature slightly (it now idles at 67 C), but not nearly enough. Drivers are also updated to the latest ones.

I should mention that the fan is always on 100% (I used RivaTuner to adjust it). Otherwise the temperature would be much higher.

You could replace that card for the price of 1 xbox game.

Some of us like to mend things. Mend and make do. That was the way during the war, now look at us. This current generation, just throwing things away. Let me tell you boy, come another war like that you'll be as disposable to your government as those plastic razors and graphics cards are to you.

I'm building a new media center PC with that 8600GT for my family and buying one of the following for my own PC:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150323&cm_re=9800gt-_-14-150-323-_-Product

XFX PVT98GYDLH GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card $105

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102864

SAPPHIRE 100283-2L Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card $160

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150439

XFX GS250XZDFU GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card $145

Which card do you think will get me the most bang for my buck?

I'm leaning towards the 5770 because of directx 11 support, which would hopefully mean that I don't have to update my video card in the next 4 or so years; but I'm not too knowledgeable in this field so I would like the input of others.

Just because a card supports DX11 does not mean it enables you to play games in DX11. The first generation cards usually won't have enough power to actually take full advantage of DX11.

i'm pretty sure a card that supports dx 11 will let you play more dx 11 games than a card that doesn't support dx11

Maybe when I get done my build I might get myself a batter card like 5870.... not because it has DirectX 11 support but for the 2 GB of mem. but for now I will stick with my XFX HD-489X-ZSFC Radeon HD 4890. till I get done my build then I will upgrade the rest.

And on a Sad note the only leg up I can see the 4890 over the 5770 is the mem interface.  4770 has 256bit and 5770 has 128bit Also on a side note for the 5770 it doesn't show how effective Memory Clock is or it's Core Clock so I'm in the dark with those Specs.  But I think I made the right chooses with the budget I had and the 4890 seems better over the 5770 other then it's a power hog. Till I upgrade the thing it cost me about  around 1500$ including the OS I still need to get to make this build Also need to find my old computer up in the attic to rip out the CD drive for a bit till I get a Blu-ray RW (witch is not included to my subtotal but this is on the last of my list.) and my A drive.(and the A drive is there to stay since there really isn't much use for one but sometimes it dose come in handy besides it can't hurt)  Also i got a 1250W PSU I know it's over kill but I plan to get a few hard drives get a raid going since I know I can fill a TB easily since I have the habit of not deleting anything... I'm like a pack rat. :welp:

Edit: And no I don't got money I'm just slowly investing in to it after the build so nothing instantaneous since I  have no Tax money left I've been footing the rest to get it done. sadly. :(
