So I'm currently addicted to playing bullet shmups aka manic shooters.. Just wondering if anyone else here plays games of that genre.

If anyone is wondering what manic shooter means:

no wonder they call it 'bullet hell'. it's not your ordinary arcade shot em up,

I can't beat level 2 in Ikaruga.  :<  I enjoy the genre, but, that's more because I'm a masochist than anything else.

Man this is sort of how I am with Ghosts n Goblins.  Can't get past level 2 but I love playing it even still.

Ikaruga is the only one of these games I've played, and I just got the demo because I figured I'd never get farther than that anyway.  It's pretty fun but not easy by any means.

it is probably some sort of reverse psychology/strange loop thing going on advancing to the next level of Ghost and Goblins is that much more interesting just because it's something you fought to get to even though it's just like CASTSLE. And space shooters pretty much look like each other one I don't think I've ever seen one with INTERESTING WORLDS I didn't even think the design of the next level was some kind of incentive to keep going because they're so generic. You think someone would make a space shooter with interesting/lush worlds a la Avatar not that it would make for good gaming necessarily but it would be a draw for that person's game

I guess some have weird/freaky monsters sometimes for incentive/see what's next in the game

I like Gradius for Super Nintendo.  I never really understood the appeal of these more generic bullet hell games where the primary focus is "keep your icon inside tiny spaces in between balls."

ones i like:
- Guwange: you are on foot and are somehow able to throw insane volumes of knives and what have you. also there is some kind of spirit thing you summon on occasion. feels really good to play.
- Giga Wing: this is a capcom one. you have this shield that comes up from holding the fire button that bounces attacks back but it doesn't last all that long. once I was playing it in the arcade and this timid little guy comes up. when i die he is like "no let me show you how" and beats the game on one credit like it's the easiest thing possible. i'm pretty sure it's not the easiest thing possible.

that's about it actually.

I'm pretty sure there's a market niche of people who get a sexual arousal proportional to number of projectiles on the screen, and how tiny of a space they can squeeze their spaceship through.
