i wrote a screenplay at one point like ten years ago that was based entirely on dreams i had. there was this intro section that took place on a spaceship or something(!?!?) and the rest was this ridiculous alternate universe shit where i would literally base everything in it off of dreams i had. it was completely awful and ended up being like 200 pages of total bullshit but it was pretty fun to write.

actually, come to think of it, dreams(and hallucinations to a lesser extent) have played a big role in my writing over the years. i've always found dreams profoundly fascinating, or simply the notion that there is this alternate existence hidden within everyone's brain.

i don't really have much to contribute to this topic apart from my opinion that it's fun to tell stories that explore stuff like this. i wouldn't even know how to suggest you should approach this apart from just LOOKING WITHIN.

.......only you know the truth...............,......

i've only ever had one sex dream.

speaking of dreams, when i was kid i used to dream i was a superhuman and on the run from other "kids" in long brown coats and they were all after me so i would run, and run and run, even over rooftops.

I also had a nightmare that i was being chased by carnivorous teddybairs, the scary thing was when i woke up and had my own teddy next to me, i yelled out thinking my dream had followed me out :P.

thanks a whole bunch guys! this is all really useful stuff and i have a lot to research. i am definitely going to start keeping a DREAM LOG of kinds (i used to have one for the really vivid dreams i had which i was going to use for some sort of project a couple of years ago which i'll dig out) and am still playing with what direction to take this in.

i am thinking at the moment of it being based around a guy who slips between like reality and dreaming/day dreaming with like a clean, almost undetectable transition, and you learn about this guy and his personality through HEAVY SYMBOLISM or something. i want to put a lot in about dream theory and definitely about control (actions you take in reality determine the sort of dream world you'll end up in... but what's reality and what's a dream? heh...) but no idea about a storyline of any kind right now but i am still researching and just brainstorming ideas. it's still all up in the air but i appreciate all the help so far! thanks a lot!

i have talked to people on gw about this before but like the MAJORITY of my dreaming is lucid and i didn't realize for most of my life that that's not how everyone is

I barley dream... or i just don't remember them, the ones that i remember are the ones that pertain to me strongly... like my dreams where i'm completley female, instead of being where i am atm, but as for outright wierd ass dreams? dunno the ones that i remember are sadly, pretty mundane.

honestly I could do music for this for a while now I've wanted to do music that actually feels physically uncomfortable to listen to/stuff like that

also I had a theory the other day that all dreams are in mono if there is any music/sound because you're hearing 'internally' not with ears

no so best dream I ever had was I was at a stadium except it wasn't real like an episode of the simpsons like duff stadium and I dunno it's sort of just going around to different people at the bleachers and then it suddenly cuts away to this huge grey head that looked just like Tor Johnson http://www.deathstudios.com/Masks/categories/Tor_Johnson_mask.jpg except gray but not made of stone I don't think but I don't think my mind could decide whether it was or wasn't so he just moved stiffly like frame by frame but also stiff like stone and he also had glowing red eyes so essentially he was a combination of tor johnson with that big stone head from Legends of the Hidden Temple and then he opens his mouth the same way and goes OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAHHHHHHH like in the loudest most booming voice like you wouldn't even believe and the dream ends cold sweat probably wet myself too

I have plenty of dreams but most of them resemble going to places from my real life except they're more weird and run-down like going to college but everything's all rainy and foggy and overgrown foliage and there are none of the cool modern buildings just the plain ugly concrete ones with water damage and stuff I think and it's like surrounded by nothing but woods there's always the possibility there are other things beyond the woods but there's a real sense like this is the only human architecture for miles and if you tried to find your way out it would be like the first zelda where you'd keep coming back to the same area. I also had one similar dream at a supermarket where there was nobody there and the produce section was all overgrown and possibly the plants were alive and trying to kill me. They're not really technically nightmares because nothing ever happens they're just really strange atmosphere. Like the one time I did get attacked by something in a dream in recent times it was like this hellhound/horse of the apocalypse sort of thing that was several times bigger than a person but it was kind of cool/exciting like lord of the rings shit instead of genuinely scary

I do kind of agree with the games as dreams sort of thing and I think this is what games are missing nowadays like game developers wouldn't really know polygon for polygon how a helicopter is supposed to look like most people would be shitty at reproducing ones in their dreams and the graphic style/feel of early games was sort of like accidental dream logic on purpose

like even action games in industrial areas where there are way too many CRATES and not enough of anything else. But  the reasoning back then was like 'yeah whatever it's enough so people know where this level is supposed to be taking place'

Edit: I want to move to England in the city it looks like nothing but crappy modern architecture that lost its initial shiny pretty newness like 2 years after it was made and now it's like every bad dream you've ever had about impossibly shitty looking urban environments that has just enough sort of surrealism in the design to make it seem like something out of a dream too

ahahaha

Sounds like my game, "Stuck in a Dream."

If you want some ideas PM me. Hell, I can probably give you the game itself and let you know what I was going to do with it. Never finished the game, but the CBS is fully functional, as well as a map system, and a few different levels. If you're really serious about finishing a game, this would be right up your alley.
Sweet online game in alpha.

thanks but no thanks! i don't mean to be rude there it's just this game will most likely be quite personal to me and my thoughts/dreams. but thanks for the offer! like, i do appreciate the help and would definitely still be interested in playing what you have so far (i am completely interested in this sort of shit) but yeah, this game is going to be made from scratch, probably as a 2D exploration/platform/RPG game make in game maker or construct.

also ragnar yes, music would be superb. like i have no idea how long this is gonna take but it WILL get made. i have never been so sure of anything!

Most of the dreams that I can remember having are lucid ones. In fact, whenever a dream starts to turn and become a potential nightmare, I'm often able to force myself awake before "the scary part" can really begin.

Sometimes though, this backfires because I'll get "stuck" in between being awake and asleep, and although I'm semi-aware that I'm still not fully awake, I can't do anything about it at first. Eventually I somehow break through and snap wide awake. I believe this occurs due to Sleep Paralysis

Ironically, being trapped in a state of sleep paralysis is more disconcerting and frightening than any nightmare could be--feels kind of like drowning, at least for me it does.

Using this at the moment, so just look at it like art. As a example, really. I'm not really sure how my game will be made as such? DigitaArts made it at charas-project for me.

There is Alundra at most that uses a dream like story. Mine does, you enter them,  I think that's where I got my inspiration from: Alundra.

I had a dream last night where every time I was thinking about something in my dream, I would become part of my thoughts. I was thinking about sailing, and while I was thinking about it, I was on a sailboat. But when I was done with that thought, I went back to the original dream.

Funny you should mention this. I had an idea for a game where the player character keeps having a recurring dream where he's an adventurer in a fantasy world. So long as he writes his experiences down in a dream journal, he can continue his dream wherever the last one left off, and be able to make progress through this mysterious world.

The game would be a roguelike, due to the random nature of dreams. Each floor is one night's worth of dreams. If you are killed, you awaken with no memory of your dream, and thus everything you did on that floor is lost. As you go deeper into this dreamworld, you begin to uncover the dark secrets suppressed within your own unconscious...
