Japan nationalbonuses:
All units always fight as if they have full health.
Special units, Samurai and Zero: gets fighting bonus against fighters. Zero itself is... a fighter! So until somebody invents Jet Fighters Japan will overrule the sky.
Also the end-game unit is Giant Death Robot. a walking tank aka anime mecha. ridicilously strong but weak in... city fighting xD

Ottoman nationalbonus: has 50% chance to convert the destroyed Barbarian NAVAL units. hell yeah

Incan bonus: All the forests inside Incan borders are considered as roads. No need for seperate roads that require upkeep.

Persian bonus: Golden Ages last 50% longer and during that units get +1 to movement and +10% to strenght. ahhaha so it's about Cyrus' rule in Persia during the long era of peace? except that cyrus is replaced by Darius in Civ 5. National building: Satrap's Court, replaces banks. Banks now give +2 to happiness. National unit: My Immortal.
i like how you can't really figure out the bonuses for Persia with logic since it's based on historical facts rather than NATIONAL CLICHE OR IDEAL.

So yeah, it's kinda semi-bad ranting topic but seriously, it's just kind of out of my comprehension why did they do these national bonuses from the start with since it's most of the time it's either ridicilously unbalanced because of you know NATIONAL CLICHES or because they are just wanton (see: ottoman bonuses). Also social friction. why our country doesn't have these bonuses (ridicilously positive, absolutely realistic), why does that country have those bonuses.

So uh hold on let's think of some good use for this topic. Think of some good national bonuses for the country of your choosing, so to speak. 

welp finland: woodland guerilla II: every unit moves 2 in forests, can move after the strike. SISU: units gain bonuses logaritmically related to the tide of war (you can't kill 'em). b-big bad r-russia... gulp.. but we made it we own

Islamic countries get's QURAN, grants same bonuses as Pacifism automaticly, neighbours react you +5 positively because you are such a nice peaceful religion.
or perhaps the national unit is suicide bomber/taliban: acts as small mini nukes, destroys the unit, makes ALL (yes you heard me ALL) countries -5 angrier with you when you use it, can take over any unit. this was propably Sid Meier's original idea. SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID!!! let's make a poll about this in some big site...

African countries national "bonus": -75% wealth, perhaps call it Exploitation? On the other hand, national bonus: Always Get Jewel Mines.

EDIT i mean maybe this would work for the best, extremely polarising extremely dumb extremely fun. Sid won't get to suggest his ideas again (no more fucking ideas off from anime jesus christ)

I didn't like the national bonuses at first either but I remember someone complained that you could play civ iv the same way no matter which civilization you choose and this sorta changes that. I've only played a few turns as russia and into the renaissance with songhai so I don't know how good/bad they really are.

mexico: border invasion, sacrifice 1 population in a city bordering a rival to send them to theri country and bring it down from the inside.

england: british fuck you install an offshore platform in rival's border and make it explode

italy: italian restaurants appear in all rival's cities, decreasing their citizens' health and physical attractiveness by 3. special unit: italian meat ball

america: a great ape appears giving all units a dodge AC bonus of +1

australia: can choose to sacrifice 1 poulation every turn for a happiness bonus

I like this but BP isn't really british anymore it wasn't our fault. plus I'm pretty sure a whale cause it to go wrong anyway with all that "sonar" shit
