Which tv show do you think has the best opening sequence, and why?

My personal favourite has to be Rubicon's. It alone made me want to watch the entire series even though I wasn't fully invested with the show within the first few episodes. (I'm now glad I stuck around because it really picked up). Anyway, what makes it great to me is how fluid it is and how well it shows the basic premise of the show - hidden messages in seemingly ordinary things, ie. conspiracy theories. Plus, the music is just great.

Please post your favourite opening tv sequence. I like watching them.

I only know Delia Derbyshire because of doctor who music so here's that. iirc she only arranged it from someone else's composition though

There was nothing as impressive as this in my youth. The voice, the music, the exploding text, the thunder, everything! And in the end SOMETHING explodes just for the heck of it.

as far as i'm concerned there is a right answer to this. mission: impossible

this video is actually a montage of series one openings, but it's basically a selection of extremely short cuts from that episode for 30 seconds rather than several minutes(this video just moves onto the next episode rather than going to the cast section). what's funny is that the show is never really this visually interesting, but they just isolate the best 30 seconds of the episode and throw it into the intro to drag you into it. don't get me wrong, this is pretty silly, since it's just half second shots of peter graves punching somebody or martin landau DRAMATICALLY opening a briefcase, but i think it works. also don't know if i'm biased slightly here because i thought this was the coolest thing ever as a kid and the song was then and is still one of my favorites.

actually if you've never seen this show before, take a look at this hooligan's youtube account. they're uploading the entire series. the show is kinda goofy and dated, but i think it's still a lot of fun.

the tomorrow people one is pretty fucking cool too though

uh serious answers

lolol typical american family sitting down to watch TV... or is it!!

not so serious

HELP LIFE IS METAL GEAR SOLID ALL OF A SUDDEN

seriously though it has the exact same visual fetishes as hideo kojima (I expect to be able to hit R2 button to zoom in on people's faces) theme song is kind of cool though seems like randomly too SAD for a TV soundtrack weird chord progression I thought only existed in random Konami-Namco games (when I write - I mean a slash keyboard is broken) or Boards of Canada decides to soundtrack a stealth game like amon tobin did

also like hideo kojima shouldn't our SWAT team be all diverse-multiethnic or something???? no because our image of america is some movies from the 1980s

it even has like the shots of random techno shit - numbers - HTML code which is all layered and reminds me of when you get those floaters in your eyes the way it moves

also the mike and molly intro is kind of funny it feels like some hyperreal idealized intro to a 90's sitcom I can't remember last time I've seen nice night shot of a city (think frasier intro or something) - it's always like gritty cop drama city or daytime sort of new york optimistic rudy guliani kind of feels like some creepy propaganda to me come to new york you probably won't get blown up our drivers are very friendly

the last paragraph probably made no sense sorry

also all these shows might be cool for the theme songs more than the visuals really

also does jj abrams have intros to any of his shows what an unfun guy it's like radiohead we can't have music videos to our songs

Unsolved Mysteries 1990 Intro
I'm glad that you mentioned Unsolved Mysteries. The show really used to give me the spooks, and it still does to this day. In fact, the intro music in that particular clip isn't as bad as the music in subsequent episodes when they switched it around a bit. Not to mention that Robert Stack's voice is naturally eerie, and it really builds onto the whole effect.
