Hello!

I'm looking for help with the RPGmaker series. Almost all of my experience was from 6+ years ago with RPGmaker 2000 and a little bit of 2k3 - as you may notice by my account creation date. I've seen that RPGmaker VX has been released for a few years but people on these boards still use 2000/2k3.

Are there any issues with VX? I understand that working with the older versions is easier due to familiarity, but are there any reasons to avoid VX aside from the first-person battle system? (assuming that the user is unfamiliar with RGSS/Ruby). Perhaps it's the incompatibility of resources?

Thank you for your responses!

learning ruby will be more engaging and valuable than virtually anything else you can do inside the RPG maker programs so choose one of the newer ones. it's also cross-applicable to web development (make a cool site for your game!) and general computer programming, which is a valuable skill for any game developer. they have basically all the features of the old ones, as far as i know so you can ease into it. i think that the rtp graphics are vaguely nicer, but making your own is a lot of fun too. (easier to do when you wrote your own game program though!)

I'm loyal to 2003 simply because I enjoy the graphic styles better. I envy VX for its versatility though.
Sweet online game in alpha.

Honestly, I used 2k the most. 2k3 was a nice improvement on that, but if I were to get back into it today, I would definitely go with VX for the versatility.

I am on board with Renegade and pwnr far-q. The graphics style is what I *crave*.... but I wish I had started learning on rmxp. I make my own graphics so programming versatility is key.

But I've been using rm2k/3 for so many years and can do such awesome custom stuff, I'm reluctant to give it all up to learn again. I'm an old man stuck in his ways.....
