"Middle class" is about the most misused label ever, it really doesn't mean anything. It's also used to mean working/lower class by mainly politicians who want to be polite. (At least, in the US.) At the very least it has a very broad income range.

That's the thing though, in British society it (up until now anyway) has ALWAYS had importance and meaning. Not that the meaning was great by any means, but it was a really significant part of our culture. Even now it's a controversial issue concerning who belongs to which class.

It used to be a distinction between commoners - i.e. professional commoners/rich commoners (middle class) and non-professional/poor commoners (working class). Obviously in our system the only people who are "upper" class are 'nobles' (except for the Lower Upper Class which generously allows Lord Mayors and Judges to be a part of it).

I totally understand that this isn't the same for the rest of Europe by any means, and if I'm honest it'd be a fantastic situation if there were no class system at all. However, in Britain it's linked quite a lot to identity - i.e. a way to feel better than other people.

when i was 7 or 8 i was watching the simpsons and they made a joke about being a middle class family in it, so later i asked my dad 'dad, are we middle class?' and he basically spat at the sound of it and snarled 'JAMIE SON - WE'RE WORKING CLASS.'

Lol yeah, exactly. A lot of my family would be FURIOUS to be considered middle class. Hell, Paolo's father was surprised I considered HIM middle class, and he lives in a fucking mansion and seems to have infinite wealth (plus he's the most middle class person both Paolo or I have ever met!)

But in the US apparently everyone is middle class, from like Hank Hill, to Peter Griffin, to Homer Simpson. Like they all do what are considered Working Class jobs here, but Working Class/Lower Class in the US seems to only consist of drug users, prostitutes, and beggars.

to many of you guys i'm sure that something like 80,000 per year sounds like luxury, but keep in mind that you're likely thinking of living on your own as a single white male. my brother was saying that he would feel so rich if he were making 80k/year when he moves to Boston (as opposed to what he makes right now in Michigan), even though he grew up on 200k/year in Michigan. also it's interesting how perception of money changes as we age. like as a 5-year-old, a hundred dollars seems like a lot. to me as a high-schooler, a thousand dollars seems like a lot. i know that as i get older i'll start gaining a better intuition for money value and that just seems so strange to me. maybe i'm just talking obvious crap here but to me it's something interesting to think about

you live in suburbia where all of you are upper or maybe MAYBE upper middle class if you think that 200k isn't a lot. Even with a full family that is a fuckload of money. That wouldn't be alot of money if you lived in miami, new york, or seattle but that is a shitton of money in Michigan even I'm pretty sure. Both my parents worked and together they didn't break 100k raising three kids. 80k is college education level annually. I know people with a four year degree that work offshore that would be lucky if they hit 80k. I work fulltime with a technical education and I don't know if I make more than 50k a year and thats damn good for someone my age without a college education pretty much anywhere.

yeah you're not going to be able to afford a g4 or whatever the fuck raising a family on 200k but I bet all your parents bills are paid, they own land and/or businesses and you and your siblings got college covered.

Thats upper class and people struggle their whole lives to get to that point. shit my parents cut it close a couple times going from check to check when I was growing up but I still lived pretty comfortably if not spoiled.

he's definitely a total loon. i knew he was very, very big on the pop culture references but it didn't seem like he could start a sentence without one in this discussion, also he seems weirdly oblivious of himself with his jokes sometimes. i don't really know much about what his actual insights are into real issues, but at a glance here and elsewhere he makes some sense to me despite lady gaga 24 lost tom hanks and so on and and so on and so on

Greek MP claims his life was threatened so as to ensure he'd vote for the austerity measures.
