it kinda amazed me that there was this little pocket of people making surprisingly lucid comments about how shitty and bourgeois-masturbatory TED talks are or sometimes releasing these really raw, subversive little games (like mastaba snoopy, or anything by the catamites) that spoke to an aesthetic that I think you're hinting at.

where can i find this conversation? i am so tired of people linking me to TED talks like they are the mostm atter of fact thing life changing bullshit

also i think we all kind of halted ever since the rise of minimalism in graphic design. It is kind  of hard to explain the aesthetics of media production because there is too much to go into. But basically there is less blissfully ignorant yet creative ideas on what the future should be and very clean and sterile looks are "designed" into webpages that are nowadays might as well be called "services" I think it really goes back to those FMV games where they were so impractical and anyone who ever made them had no idea what the fuck they are doing. It's way more innocent than just making iphone games for some reason.

seeing this + gtaiv post, keep going kid... welcome to "TRUE MAN'S WORLD"... dumb topic awakening...

i think we've touched that on multiple occasions but yeah that's basically the problem in nutshell (orange and teal colours...) + the same problem permeats indiegaming and indie music aesthetics and goals etc. but as it might piss u off, i'd rather not go into that subject again (u can read dumbtopic previouspages i guess)... i'm outta steam on rage at this age/plateau + i bet others are bored to hell hearing me going on tangent about that, like *groan* yes we know that theres a problem in there bonzi but after finding the problem there are more productive ways to approach TO the problem... im merely monologing on miself ratsect, i need to kick myself in nuts sometimes to feel "alive", Hah Hah!! or just make my curmudgeon mindset impossible/hella more harder, hah hah. bonzi goes into a lengthy sermon in his post, previews post, looks smugly Heh I Totally Nailed Dem Sonnuvabitches BUT ALAS!! as he is trying to click Post button the mouse moves to Delete post on its own accord!! bonzi looks astonished!! all that work!! bonzi tries to grin in malice then he punches himself to jaw, falls under the table... "like yeah totally don't trust yourself entirely sometimes, in a good way not bad way" ~ buddha

I personally liked it better when people were making games because it was fun to share them with each other rather than out of some desire to become a smug internet celebrity. Same thing with TED talks, I like them better when it's just someone who really enjoys the topic and wants to convey how great it is instead of someone who enjoys hearing the sound of their own voice.

both times we talked about it, it was in the "what's on your mind thread", which probably got deleted accidentally when they were deleting some spammer's posts a few weeks ago. I'm kinda sad there were some good quotes

@ragnar that third one sounds like a 707 on crack. it's like the snare was so fat that they didn't bother making any other sounds after that and all the other buttons do nothing

yeah I'm kinda annoyed that one of my favorite bits of internet whimsy is using its last moment to sell some lousy ARG

leigh alexander did a great write-up about the lousiness of marketing ARGs in general a few years back that pretty thoroughly lays out why they are shitty

keystone paragraph:

"But ARGs prey on the natural desire that all people have had, since childhood, to stumble upon a special secret -- and subvert that desire into the service of a marketing campaign. I always think of poor Ralphie in A Christmas Story. Feeling anxious and marginalized as children often do, the kid hoped by ordering a Little Orphan Annie decoder ring, a prize from Ovaltine that tied into the radio drama he enjoyed, he could be needed, part of a global community of heroes. Of course, many people have seen the film: The message Ralphie uses the long-awaited ring to decode is 'BUY MORE OVALTINE.' When I think about ARGs, I think about his crushed expression."

it's a continuation/spiritual successor to This Is My Milwaukee. back in 2008 when that came out, the creators contacted our Chef Boyardee and told him he was an inspiration or something, and some of us got a little involved. that ARG was free and everything, but it ended up fizzling out.

I'm still not sure what I think of it. I'm playing it and I think I will make a thread once I finish the second part

the idea of ARGs that is that ideally you DO actually become part of this "secret society" by reaching different levels of the game. that's kind of the case here - all that PB and horse_ebooks stuff is still useful in Bear Stearns Bravo. it's not like the Halo or Amnesia's ARGs that are just promoting the games, in which case the ARG essentially ends when the game is officially announced.

How do you "sell" an ARG though?  Like, to me if you tell people outright than an ARG is an ARG then it makes it not one anymore.  ARGs are supposed to be mysterious, like you aren't supposed to see an ARG's strings.  So if you come out and say "I'm going to do an ARG" then you've already ruined it.

to answer that question literally, sounds like there's a 7 dollah paywall if you wade through enough of their cryptic mumbo jumbo

but yeah I get what you are saying, it's weird to have an ARG that is so blatantly calling its shots

of course this would all probably be a lot less transparent if horseybooks wasn't such a widely known and appreciated phenomenon and if the idea of ARGs wasn't already so widely known and understood in the public conscious

either way I have 0 interest in their nonsense
