ha, is it just weird childhood memories/phobias or does anyone think dragon warrior ii was more dark/gothic than the other ones? granted that was the one I got the most playtime out of during my childhood (only rented dragon warrior iii once from VIDEO HUT) and I was terrified of crossing bridges in dragon warrior i because I knew there was some new possibly scary monsters coming every time I crossed one. Dragon Warrior i was already kind of dark with THOU ART DEAD but imagine RAGNAR'S PARTY IS UTTERLY DESTROYED with this music

also the freaking tower music

and the world map theme

also in general seems like a few too many undead/demonic enemies than the usual game in the series?? Also the semblance of a plot is something to do with a cult reviving their demon god. Also going back to the world of the original game with a bunch of these things

also these enemies which look clearer in the remake

but in the original look like this (note the blue things on top that i thought were the eyes)

increasingly i feel this was meant to be the best approximation/distillation of how DWII felt to me without regard to the game designers' intent filtered through weird childhood anxiety about the game

The fairlight thing made me cry. Looking up paul panks is really interesting, allegedly his magnum opus (and he made a lot of games) contains thousands of rooms, and he said it would take months to play through properly. It seems he was not well liked at all when he was around.

I'm seeing Phoenix Games a lot lately. They published stuff like Dingo Pictures' knockoff movies and Snow White and the Seven Clever Boys.

Stole this from Neogaf while looking into standards for outputting to monochrome monitors. Thought it was pertinent to the conversations here:

Googling a screenshot is almost impossibruu but Ultima 6 on EGA was half-decent.

On CGA though, pink!

Sierra actually totally nailed EGA.

Their background pictures were not actually 16 colors only. Their background pictures contained way more than 16 colors. In fact almost 256 colors. They just ran a dithering pass on them.

upper one is the dithered background picture
lower one is the same background picture just w/o the dithering pass

I used to think the reason early CGA games made such poor use of the meagre four colours available to them was because they were all designed by artless nerds with thick, coke-bottle glasses. While that may be true, it's still only half the story.

Since most PCs at the time were connected to television sets instead of RGB monitors, clever developers would take advantage of imperfections in the TV-out to mix colours directly on the display device. Dithered black and magenta, for example, could be smeared into either solid red or solid blue, with which one you got coming down to the specific dithering pattern used.

Here's the title screen from Ultima II, courtesy of Wikipedia's article on artifact colours:

Yes one of my fb friends keeps sharing this image from page "Nihilist Memes"

At some point "memes" started meaning "any image or text you see on the Internet"

here's an album cover I have yet to use - it is imo the perfect distillation/abstraction of random dance music/acid house? album covers from the 90's found in thrift store
