a lucky ad rater

the website it links to is an anime review blog with all broken images that has its last post in 2013. one post mentions the author's (this westerner Ken) travels in Japan. apparently by this point he's been in Japan for several years for some reason? that, or takes frequent trips and visits anime-related sites.

but the post I'm concerned with in particular describe's ken's unending mission to try all forms of "melon-pan", which is described as being uniquely delicious. but his interest is clearly because of some relationship it has to an anime and/or its name. in the post, he mentions the desire to respond to the baker/cashier outside a traditional Japanese shrine with "nishishishi" instead of the normal japanese way of saying "please". this nishishishi apparently is what some schoolgirl anime character says, and the author realizes would make him sound like an anime schoolgirl and not a full-grown western adult man.

it reminds me of that otaku who moved to japan and adopted all his mannerisms and japanese language patterns from such schoolgirl animes, though it would be a miracle if they're one and the same.

anyway, the site has an "owl comic" which no longer loads, and apparently this, perhaps combined with ken's visits to japanese shrines to get melon-pan, is what some unthinking, calculating algorithm used to create this remarkable "Owl Shrine" ad - an ad which now requires human verification to say, "yes, this is exactly what we want to see."

FRESH MEAT! FRESH MEAT!!!!! Don't get excited, chums, it's just me, pineappo, with a different face. (Chorus of disappointed groans, sinking into chairs) We're just as few of body as is usual. I'm on another plane of existence and can't get to my old computer.

Lode Runner 2 has one of my favorite looks for any game, with the super dense detailed isometric abstract virtual new age rube goldberg playgrounds. It's too bad the gameplay behind Lode Runner is such complete shit or I might actually want to play it. It's actually a little unfair how fucking cool it looks in comparison to how lame and funless it really is. I guess that sentiment becomes more common as you learn of games.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McogBNRm59I

The enemies are little hooded cultists who have nothing better to do than monkey bar back and forth across virtual playgrounds. I think a few of these guys ended up taking bit parts in some catamites games like [Murder ][/Murder].

Lode Runner is just Pac-Man for snails. You can instantly see where you need to go and the challenge of getting there is in not killing yourself out of boredom as your fragile probe trudges down the straight line to victory. If it doesn't include animations you will have a better experience just looking at the map than you will trying to interact with it, which can be true for a lot of games I guess. Suspecting more proportionally was interesting about stuff from this era due to technical limitations, and that nowadays tools are too powerful for our dumbass brains to lock ourselves down to anything good. Nowadays the iinteresting creative limitations are in the brains of the developers. Making the "success rate" of whether a game will contain an interesting bit of weirdness shoot down to the pathetic trickle it is now. Versus hell virtually every NES and early arcade game have the samely inhuman grimth to them.

I wrote that last night when I was actually upset at Lode Runner but now I can think more maturely and I think that it's just lovely that it exists at all.

Hey, it's me again, CheboMan. I guess Exile is one of the best loved games for its system. Shows what I know. It looks and speaks incredible. Anyway, that's all.

The creator of Aquanaut's Holiday, Tail of the Sun, and Doshin the Giant works in a crumbling schoolhouse converted into a community center. From the very beginning he decided he would make 3 games and no more, which is why he stopped. Doshin the Giant contained "all his thoughts and feelings".

still working on stuff. the beats on this are all generated with an algorithm, i just did the sounds/synth patches n stuff

that is I wrote the algorithm too, but I'm kind of letting it do the work of writing patterns for me so I can do the parts of the creative process I enjoy more like creating really convoluted synth setups

I had a pretty good idea the other day. What if someone leaked the entire script+bestiary for the next major Final Fantasy and before it managed to get anywhere near its release date, an RPG Maker 2000 enthusiast just beat them to the punch and made the entire game in like a week or so. And it's got everything those FF crazies are into: floating rocket boats, space demons, underwater cyberpunk cities run by electric eels, fancy pants, gun dogs, Christian symbolism, and of course, CRYSTALS! Just picturing thousands of fans fussing with this archaic software, hissing at their screens, trying desperately to just get the thing to recognize English characters (I always had trouble with that). I'd imagine certain swathes of entitled gamers getting enraged that they're now "obligated" to play the "shitty fanhack" because Square Enix REFUSES to release their game fast enough.

Has this the ever happened, a fangame predating the real game, possibly becoming the real game, pulling up the number two bench seat for its big sweaty multi-billion dollar time-paradox baby? I really wish this would happen, but, with none of the consequences of course; People still get to keep there jobs and go on vacations with their families and live happy lives like they ought to. I mean if someone did do this, it probably wouldn't have much of an effect in the grand scheme of mainstream videogame culture. I'm sure there would be a few jokes about how it IS the REAL game made by the REAL PEOPLE and the actual company trying to take it down for legal reasons are just a band of posers. And Square Enix would shakes its fist and draw some studded leather jackets to vent its rage. DUPED AGAIN SQUEENIE!!

It's called Dark Lord. Visit vgjunk-retrovania.blogspot.com to see a writeup and get a drop on a lot of what I post. What you do to the worm really has to be seen to be believed.

You know something remarkable has occured when one writes down his life on a paper, and realizes that there's a time in life where "dumb topic" takes a big part of it. well done men *sarge's tears swells up* .... job well done.

not to say this as this topic's deathknell but you know, IT'S SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT:

holy shit this topic is soon 7 years old!! What started from simple oddball exchanges in MSN with (fortunately!!) insistent Ragnar blew up intto this meta- and metamedia revolution and lifestyle...

I reached dumb topic at a point early in my existence so my whole life is divided into pre and post dump topic. When I was 16 and didn't know shit and then I was 17 and saw the lighthouse through the night miles off.

Also bonzi I GOT your message, received it and GOT it. But my accounts... could only partially crunch it.

In Shamus, I like how every item you collect has its own title card: ALSO AVAILABLE: FORT APOCALYPSE (coming attractions?)

Someone from Amsterdam takes dead animal carcasses and engineers them into helicopters. Here's his cat Orville, named after one of the Wright brothers:

The Information Superfootpath

Has anyone seen that funding campaign for mobile network control points? Sonnet? I think that's super fucking cool, and very futuristic in a stoking way not depressing, the idea of the Internet - perhaps just when most menaced by heartless corporate interests - suddenly exploding into a billion fractured local ab-Usenets extending within three mile radii. Vulnerable "termite content" made secret and invincible by diffusion over bootleg bands for price of a deep fryer. Sort of a weird unexpected return to the Dark Age of UHF signals bouncing strange MVs and porns over nighttime hillsides, and personal and spatial websites - public access virtual reality. Mystery men will roam the steppes in Somebody will make a standard of inter-mini-internet transmission so we can safely relay long distances over myriad connections Hands Across America style, then the Internet and by extension private cheap as free idea exchange will be undefeatable, and it won't need fake trees and subscriptions and expensive mirrors in the sky to work, we'll have it down here among us where it belongs.
