Just a quick note but there are no passwords in the database, only hashes (which, incidentally, have been salted). So don't worry, nobody knows you use dEmImOOreLuv to get into your Gmail account.

Since the salt is also stored in the database along with the hashes it's easy to get passwords out. A friend has done it before for various reasons with an SMF database; rainbow tables and tigers and brutes (oh my)

My point is merely that we submit this data to the database assuming it will never be given to anybody else.

Haha, you're speaking as if the GW db has never changed hands before. Hint: It has.

Not that I care.

I've decided that I won't be bothering with copying the posts, the site will stand with it's own merit.

I would like to change the subject now to URL suggestions, thank you.

My intention is not to "act" at all, I'm just stating the legal perspective of such a move since that's one way of solving such a debate.

URL - well, is this an "official" rendition or just a spur?

The name Gaming World has a great deal of respect and memorability in "the community". I never understood why the url was gamingw though, I could never remember it lol.

gamingw.org/.com are free. gamingworld.ws is also free.

are you specifically trying to NOT use saltw/saltworld? Because I still have saltworld.net pointed here (though it's not set up on the server correctly) and it could be repurposed or whatever.

It's going to be called Gaming World. The url will be something derivative of that, it could be as simple as just buying the old one with another suffix.

I don't really think it should be called Gaming World for the same reasons we changed this site to Salt World.  It's not going to be solely about gaming.

That's a good point. I think we could get away with it and I'm inclined to keep it otherwise I will just be creating a titless version of DeviantArt.

I have plans for the registration process which will make it very clear to new users what are our acceptable forms of media. Gaming World primarily, yes - there will be an open way of submitting things.

I don't have to name it until it's done. That's the beauty of having a testing server. Fire me some suggestions and we can say how good or rubbish they are when the time comes.

Not going to post all the details of the design.

here's how i see it, you're either going for

a) upload "creative media" so anything like pics, drawings/paintings/"art", music, games, etc etc etc

b) upload game-related "creative media"

so in case a you have a deviantart/flickr/whatever ripoff and thats a dumb idea

and in case b you have a workable idea. so a domain name that says "game related upload and share or something" game database, assetdb, something about game assets. i think thats a good idea.

I disagree with you about case A.  The thing is, we (at least based on things we talked about in pre-Salt World topics) want a site for our community.  The idea is we want a site that showcases OUR games, OUR music, OUR writing, OUR art, etc.  So who cares if deviantart or flickr or whatever technically lets you do those things?  They don't let you do all of those things in the same place and they aren't focused around OUR community.  That's what this site was always supposed to be, a site for our community to showcase what we have going on.

I mean going by your case B we'd just be gamejolt or w/e other indie gaming site.

A great way to showcase art and gam's is to post them on a forum.

But nobody wants to slog through a forum to find the good stuff, which is the whole point of having a site.

That's why you have screenshots threads, update threads, staff to highlight good projects and good art, contests, and this week on gamingw.

It seems to me you've got two choices you see, 1. work with what you've got and have it up and running now, or 2. plan something big that nobody will ever use which will take years to do.

It's a community - the key is to do community things. You need community leaders not web developers if you want it to be active again.

I'm drawing on experience here, having spent a few years running a similar site. We had all kinds of mainsites and screenshot dumps and utilities and whatnot, and in the end people neither want nor use them in the long run - the site was more popular when it had staff actively working with the community doing group events and news and shit.

I think you're totally wrong in this.  The more clicks you put between a user (and I'm talking a new user here, not someone like myself) and content the less likely they are to look at it.  If you make them go to a forum, find a subforum, find the stickied thread, by this time a lot of people stopped caring.  If you have a single mainsite that has everything right in your face (look at ed's mockup here if you haven't already) then they are immediately given the content.  Forums are a terrible way to highlight content.  I'm sure Something Awful has tons of amazing threads, but people who aren't already into reading their forums are much more likely to read the front page articles.  Forums are not meant to be a way of showcasing specific things and they aren't set up to make this easy.  We've had a Finished Games board for ages and how many of them have almost no (or none at all!!!) replies?

Also I don't think it's going to take ed years to put a site with these functions together.

I'd think I'd be wrong too, but that's what happened. My mainsite was never used, and my site was much more active when we instead focused on community events and shit.

That's the thing, you don't even have staff posting in them so why are members going to join and do the same?

You need people there running and maintaining the site who actually give a fuck about the content, rather than just running the site in the background. Like, get some game reviewers to review any completed games posted. Or at least do a feature on new games every month or something.

And shit look where your completed games board is - it's a tiny subforum of a board called Advertising in a section that is in with the "dead crap". Why isn't it even in the creativity section \o_O/
